A Lot of New Straight Trucks

Why ? You have a better chance of getting a proper front axle on an used class 8 tractor than you do on a new expeditor.
Also, almost no enforcement on front axle weight.

We have been checked on front axle weight several times, always when out west. IF I were going to up fit a tractor front axles would be one of the things I would pay close attention to. I am not sure if I would even go that way to begin with. I believe, but just guessing, that it would be hard to find the engine/tranny/rear end combo I would prefer.

close to 14. We have not weighed it since moving the APU back further on the truck. I would want 15.5 or 16 on the front if I ever built a new truck

14 plus axles were common on class 8 trucks a few years back.
I'm under 14 on my truck. And I imagine the 20,000 axle weighs quite a bit.

13.3, "H", run with lift axle down MOST of the time, except when we are very light, empty with wet/icy roads. Weight is fine with lift axle down. It MAY be OK since we moved the APU but I keep forgetting to weigh it.

Can't afford to lose weight, too much money invested in it

Could be. ALumijunk was good with engine/tranny/rear end combo's, lousy on wheel base, axles etc

I can remember a time when using the term "Alumijunk" would put you in the penalty box. The times they are a changing.

I've noticed that a lot of the 780's have 12.5 front axels, would It need to be replaced with a heavier unit?

Dry box. No. Load heavier to the rear.

Reefer. Few would spend the $$$.
I suspect that most str8's have 12,12.3, or 12.5.

I know me and my dad are looking extremely hard at the Volvo 780 tractors to decide what we would want in one. I voted the 780 because it has the biggish 70" sleeper, which coming from a ford van sounds like an apartment on wheels lol. He wants auto, I don't care either way, neither have any idea on engine brand or size so that doesn't help much and he said he'd go with a twin screw what ever that means.

If your buying a volvo all I keep hearing about us how great the d13 (volvo motor) and i-shift auto is (also volvo). Great fuel economy and well built for the many miles you'll put on it. It's what we are looking at as well.
