A History of Expediting

This will be my last post in this thread about the history of expediting project. It's time to move on to the actual work.

I knew someone or people would rise to level charges regarding ego and credit. In all productive endeavors in all fields, people always do. Now that we have that predictable development out of the way, my answer is simple.

I'm the editor. If there was no editor (project lead, author, whatever you wish to call it), there would be no book. As all proper books do, this book will acknowledge all contributors and sources in the acknowledgement section (contributors) and notes (sources).

Expediters and industry writers have had many years to write a history of expediting. To date, no one has. Having discovered people's interest in the topic and willingness to help, I thought I'd give it a go.

The history of expediting project in no way precludes others from proceeding with a less formal history of expediting in the EO open forum or any other venue. So too with a Hall of Fame. If you have an idea of what you would like to see happen in either regard, by all means go for it. You will not offend me or anyone else on the team if you do. If history team members wanted to contribute their time and talent to both projects, that would be just fine with me, as long as our history team people conducted themselves professionally and maintained confidences as appropriate.

In fact, this might be a good time for someone (not me) to create a proper expediter hall of fame committee. The committee founder or founders can make the group as open or exclusive and as democratic or dictitorial as they wish. The criteria for hall of fame inclusion can set as committee members deem best, or by a self-appointed individual who simply announces the project and rules, and asks people to support his or her efforts.

The committee could have its organizing meeting face-to-face at the hotel adjacent to the upcoming Expedite Expo. If democracy is desired, time-honored procedures exist for forming such committees in a democratic fashion. Interested people can put those procedures to use, or proceed informally if they think that best.

However it comes into being, I hope someone starts an expediter hall of fame committee or project. There is at least as much interest in an expediter hall of fame as there is in the history of expediting. I believe a number of good folks would rise to help if given the opportunity. All that is needed is for someone to rise and get the ball rolling.

Changing the subject, history team members have barely begun to talk to others about the history of expediting. Already, high-quality support is coming in at a surprising rate. We are learning of photo collections we did not know about before. Friends at Land Line magazine are helping us access info we need to populate time lines. Contacts are being mentioned about who, for example, to contact at a particular entity about that entitie's history. Memories from the road are being shared that are helping to shape the project and it's end result.

In short, a treasure-trove of expediting information is rising almost on its own in response to this project. It seems the history of expediting has a life of it's own and it's story that wants to be told. It's going to be a good deal of work, and a good deal of fun to sort through it all. It is also going to be a sobering responsibility to get it right.

The people who are rising to share their information and to help with the work know this project is not about credit or ego. It's about giving back. It's about producing something good that will be of interest and use to others, now and in the future.

Readers who wish to participate are welcome to do so at any level they wish for as long or brief as they wish.

If you have a few photos to share with notes about what they are, and that's all you wish to add, you are welcome. If you can pledge one day of library research time and no more, we'll find something important for you do do in that day. If you wish to simply submit your recollections from the road to help team members understand what the issues of the early days were, you are urged to do so. If you wish to pour your heart and soul into the project, that energy will be welcome too.

If you wish to help or have something to add, please contact me by private e-mail.

Thank you.

While Lawrence and I have not yet discussed the mechanics, my expectation is the completed work will be published on the EO web site, probably as a downloadable e-book. A paper-bound version may also be printed. I also expect that copyright rights will belong to ExpeditersOnline and/or On Time Media.

My web site is a non-commercial endeavor that does not compete with EO but links back to it numerous times. It is a back-burner hobby. I plink away at it as time permits, but technology-wise my site is terrible. There are no bells and whistles. It is not designed to draw large numbers of users. Traffic to that site ranges from a tiny, tiny trickle to nothing.

Some of what I write does not fit into any section EO has. Some items have nothing to do with expediting at all. What doesn't fit here can go there. My bio is there because it is a useful way to introduce myself to others from time to time. The successful expediters blog concept (not yet live) rose out of my frustrations with the ongoing negativity found in the EO Open Forum.

Months before opening my web site, I did the ethical, professional and up-front thing. I discussed it with Lawrence (EO General Manager) to make sure it worked for him. It does.

OK. NOW I'm done posting in this thread.

Unfortunately negativity occurs.Question is why? There are strong personalities in this business as in every other one. Some individuals try to push their opinions on others with very little background or experience to support these opinions. Sometimes threats of possible litigation are made to attempt to sway other individuals.

Sad but it has become the American way. I want my thoughts to be number one and thats it. Hell in the middle East you either think my way or I will do you in. Here in the USA we use the court system..

If as you say, your intent is to publish it here at EO, then it would seem logical to have the surface work presented on a seperate forum on EO to validate the information. Having it on a seperate controlled website doesn't accomplish that. Rather than history, we may get a self promoting personal piece rather than something that is factual. If it is based on the authors past and recent posts, one could make that deduction. Just a recent thread (Denton TX) leads me down that path of thought. That isn't taking into account any other posts that historically have been controversial.
If pursued, I hope that is not the path.
Since the members of EO and expedite industry are the most likely to read it, then put those merits and contributions on a seperate forum so they can be validated by many rather than one.
As with anything factual, the authors credibility on the issues will come into play, good or bad.
Only time will tell as to its value and ultimate purpose.
If it follows the path of your last two handouts, then I think you may have a good project.
Outside of that, go for it.

I think Phil will do a great at putting together all the info on the history of expediting. It's a very big project in doing it. So my hat's off to you for trying to do it, and I will try to help you as much as I can by trying to find the info needed.

If facts are spelled out clearly, such as this book is a private endeavor with the editor being Phil as himself and not Phil as the senior secret editor of EO or whatever, and people want to contribute to that venture, that is fine but this to me does not seem like the place for that sort of thing. I along with others have business ventures outside of EO also, but I do not come to EO and promote my ideas or ventures looking for participants at a place I do not intend to present them at- Phil your history book idea is a good one, but I think you are in the wrong place to be promoting this venture. I looked at your website Phil, it looks to be by invitiation only. Perhaps invite those who you feel are worthy and capable of doing your venture to your own venue, and keep things here on the fair and level for the sake of those not interested in your personal projects. Thanks Denny

I also think Phil is the right guy for the job, provided he takes off his rose-colored glasses and includes the bad with the good. Times can get tough in this business. Take right now for instance. Freight is very soft and there are a lot of trucks sitting. 2001 was not a good year and all the major carriers saw significant shrinkage in their fleet numbers. These kinds of things should'nt be glossed over too much. Please don't yell at me for being negative, I'm just trying to keep it real.

Mudflap,

You are mistaken. The history of expediting project is is not a private business venture of mine. As stated elsewhere, EO will own the copyright to the book, not me. Diane and I got into expediting partly to simplify our lives. We do not have business ventures outside of of our personal expediting business. I write for fun, not profit.

Thank you for clarifying that this book project is going to be a part of EO Phil, I think people will feel more comfortable and be more willing to contribute to it knowing it is not a private affair.
