Just an in-frame or replacement engine won't cut it. Has to have the DPF. Tack another $16k onto your redo price tag.
The options, IMHO, are to take California off your registration, or buy a new (or newer) truck. If you're thinking about TVAL, the latter is pretty much the only option. If you're staying in surface, I'd pick the former. Having a hard time justifying the expense for a few runs west per year, myself.
