    Modern Life In Appalachia

There is simply no comparison to be made regarding women living under government sanctioned Sharia and domestic relationships in the United States. Men and women all over the world may quarrel, but sharia's legal code and system of punishment are not comparable in any way to American life.

The Kentuckians I know treat women well. But, that doesn't fit the narrative of a thread designed to disparage Appalachia.

I see nowhere in this story where a "Christian" court ordered the slaying of anyone. Islamic sharia courts, however, order stoning to death, cutting off limbs and other barbaric practices. The murder depicted above wasn't court ordered or sanctioned by government.

Quotes pertaining to a very old conflict.

Small minds will go to great lengths to discredit a great thinker. Mark Twain has few, if any, peers in the pursuit of communicating by the written word. There is much to be learned from writers such as Twain, Churchill, Lincoln, Jefferson, Madison and Washington. All of these men were...

    Modern Life In Appalachia

Mark Twain was a thoroughly modern man of the late 1800's. People live only in the context of their time on Earth. Twain lived as a product of 19th century America. He had no choice in picking which epoch to live. To apply 21st century social parameters on an 18th century man is meaningless...

Cheri, please give an example in the Judeo-Christian world where there is a single instance of punishments decreed by law where cutting off hands, feet, noses, gouging out eyes, public flogging or stoning people to death is happening? There aren't any! There is no comparison to be made...

    Modern Life In Appalachia

There's no sport in teasing Appalachians. It's too easy. We Appalachians mock ourselves without mercy. It develops character and builds a thick skin. For every drunk redneck story, a contrasting view of Appalachian stock can be found: Medal of Honor recipient recalls deadly ambush -...

Excerpts from Mark Twain's "Innocents Abroad."

Actually, all chapters of "Innocents Abroad" are good. Twain's travels through Spain, France Greece, Turkey and much of the Middle East are detailed with keen observation and humor. Twain includes serious social commentary at times as seen through the eyes of a man living in the 1860's. No...

Celebrated American author Mark Twain wrote of his travels to the Holy Land in 1867. His book "Innocents Abroad" published in 1869 chronicle those travels and was written in a time before modern political correctness corrupted thought and free speech. This virtue, in and of itself, make...
