Truckers who want a little darker tint on their windows should pay attention. The International Window Film Association is asking FMCSA to grant an exemption from the current window tinting regs.

Currently, window tint on the windshield and windows to the immediate right and left of the driver cannot restrict the incoming light to less than 70 percent. The International Window Film Association is asking for an exemption for film that would not block more than 50 percent of the light.

The group says 50 percent film does not appear very different to the 70 percent film and provides no added benefit on UV protection for the driver. However, the group points to a 1988 study that states the 50 percent film can reduce fuel consumption by reducing the interior temperatures of the cab and reduce glare or haze to reduce eye strain.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will accept comments on the exemption application for 30 days, until Feb. 22. You can file comments to docket number FMCSA-2013-0436 online at regulations.gov or by fax to 202-493-2251.
