Transportation funding proposals unveiled

U.S. House and Senate leaders have unveiled their budget requests, and they differ by about $5 billion per year on transportation and infrastructure.

The House budget request announced by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, includes about $46 billion per year for transportation and infrastructure, about $5 billion less than the Senate budget request of $50.8 billion per year announced by Sen. Patty Murray, D-WA.

In general terms, the Ryan proposal cuts $4.6 trillion in overall federal spending over 10 years and promises a balanced budget in 2023 with no new taxes.

The Murray budget request couples $875 billion in spending cuts with $923 billion in new taxes. This would lead to a deficit of between $500 million and $600 million by 2023, according to the Capitol Hill publication Transportation Weekly.
