Sen. Mark Warner to chair transportation subcommittee

The recent death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg left some big shoes to fill on Senate committees that affect trucking and transportation. Senate leaders announced Monday that Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia will chair the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, announced Warner, a fellow Democrat, to the subcommittee chairmanship on Monday, June 10.

“Senator Warner knows first-hand the importance of making investments in our transportation system and how they fuel our economic engine,” Rockefeller said in a statement.

Warner’s move to chair the subcommittee left a brief opening on the Subcommittee on Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion. Rockefeller announced that Sen. Earl Blumenthal, D-Ore., will fill that position.

Lautenberg, first elected to Congress in 1982, died June 3 at the age of 89. He had held subcommittee chairmanships on the Senate Appropriations Committee in addition to the Commerce Committee. He was also a key member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on which he was a member of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
