Roadcheck 2013 will zero in on cargo securement, coaches and buses

Beginning on Tuesday, June 4, and running 72 hours straight, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and its members across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be participating in the 26th annual Roadcheck enforcement campaign promoting commercial vehicle safety.

Approximately three times the typical daily number of inspections will be conducted during the campaign.

This year, in addition to North American Standard Level I inspections, Roadcheck is focusing on proper securement of cargo. According to the CVSA, about one in 10 out-of-service violations issued during Roadcheck are for improper cargo securement.

In December 2012, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration made changes to the Safety Measurement System as part of the Compliance, Safety, Accountability ranking program. Cargo securement-related violations that are tracked via CSA are now part of the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC – a category that measures a motor carrier’s compliance with vehicle-related violations.

This year, the enforcement attention will be placed on passenger-carrying commercial vehicles – motorcoaches and buses. During the 72-hour blitz June 4-6, inspectors across North America will conduct Level I inspections of trucks, tractor-trailers, buses and motorcoaches, and submit inspection records to their state, provincial and federal jurisdiction systems for analyses. CVSA compares overall inspection results with those of past years and maintains current results to help identify trends and to measure program effectiveness.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has provided to each state and province quick reference visor cards for distribution to drivers during Roadcheck 2013, with information about the new hours-of-service requirements that are scheduled to take effect July 1, 2013.
