Boston’s ban on daytime hazmat shipments within the city limits was supposed to be lifted this past Monday, May 17.

But at the last minute, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration gave the city another 45 days to try to justify the ban. The Boston Globe says U.S. Sen. John Kerry urged the FMCSA to grant the extension.

The head of the Massachusetts Motor Transportation Association says the last-minute change is “very confusing for truckers.”

In originally ordering Boston to end the daytime hazmat ban, the FMCSA said the effect of the ban was simply to push hazmat loads out of the city and into surrounding communities.
