FMCSA delays med card deadline for a year

WASHINGTON — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is delaying by a year the deadline for professional truck drivers to provide medical certification to the state that issued their CDL.

FMSCA officials appearing on the national Dave Nemo show made the announcement Thursday morning.

The decision will become official when it is published in the Federal Register next week.

Sources told The Trucker that several states had told the FMCSA that they would not be ready to implement the agency rule that combined CDL and medical certificates so that drivers would be able to provide proof of medical certification with their CDL.

As a result of Thursday’s announcement, drivers will have to carry with them copies of their medical certification. Until the rule goes into effect in 2015, drivers will still have to report operating status and medical certificates when renewing CDLs, the FMCSA said.
