SAN DIEGO — Daimler Trucks North America announced that it will offer Detroit-brand medium-duty engines beginning in 2016.

The DD5 and DD8 will expand Detroit’s engine lineup, which currently features 13-, 15- and 16-liter diesels.

The announcements were made here Oct. 6 during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition.

The new engines will be offered throughout DTNA’s product portfolio, which includes Freightliner, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses and Freightliner Custom Chassis vehicles.

The DD5 and DD8 initially will be built and shipped from Daimler’s powertrain facility in Mannheim, Germany. A transition to North American development is expected in 2018, said DTNA President Martin Daum.

During a media briefing, Daum offered an extremely upbeat assessment of the North American Classes 6-8 market, projecting 2015 sales could reach as high as 411,000. That would be about 10% above what DTNA projects for industrywide sales for 2014.

In addition to engines, Detroit offers axles, transmissions and telematics products for the commercial transportation industry in the on-highway and vocational markets.
