DETROIT — Officials in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, closed some streets near the Ambassador Bridge amid concerns about fallen debris from the international span linking the city with Detroit.

Windsor says in a statement on its website that two streets were closed Wednesday after one was closed last Friday as a precaution. The city says the additional closures were recommended as a public safety measure after a visual inspection of the bridge's underside.

A Detroit International Bridge Co. representative tells The Associated Press on Thursday morning they plan to issue a statement. Bridge owner by Manuel "Matty" Moroun wants to build a new bridge adjacent to the current one, but efforts have been stymied.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services officials said crews would provide an aerial truck to assist city engineers on Thursday.

According to an article by the Windsor Star, a fire truck helped a city-hired structural engineer check parts of the bridge's platform Wednesday to see if more roads and sidewalks below needed to be closed.

Transport Canada inspected the bridge in June and identified required repairs; the bridge company has started them and recently said a Pennsylvania-based engineering firm would replace the bridge's crumbling railings next spring, the Windsor Star reported.

Windsor says it plans to meet with bridge representatives to determine what needs to be done before streets will reopen.
