Chrysler Group is investing nearly $1.1 billion in a factory that will build the Ram ProMaster commercial van, the company announced.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said during an Oct. 10 dedication event at the Saltillo, Mexico, plant that the facility — which launched production in July — will create 1,100 jobs by December. The ProMaster, which is based on the Fiat Ducato van, will be sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Chrysler said in a statement.

Marchionne, who also is CEO of Fiat, was joined at the event by Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Chrysler also is spending $164 million to expand another Saltillo plant that produces 4-cylinder engines for Chrysler’s passenger vehicle lineup, along with V-8 engines for its trucks. This expansion will create 470 jobs, Chrysler said. With these expansions, the plants will have a combined employment of nearly 6,500, the company said.

“I would like to thank President Enrique Pena Nieto for the support his administration has given us, first as governor and now as president” Marchionne said. “He has always shown a great commitment to promoting strategically important projects. All of this would not be possible without the extraordinary spirit of collaboration we have found in both the federal and state governments.”
