Kernersville, NC — Expedited transportation company All State Express has purchased four acres adjacent to Union Cross Business Park with an eye on building a corporate home within the next two years.

The $232,000 purchase comes as the company adds owner-operators that haul All State Express trailers and as it diversifies into warehousing and assembly services.

“We are continuing to add staff as our driver base grows,” said Bill Gansman, vice president at All State Express. “We’ve got to grow our staff to ensure we’re properly supporting the people who drive our business.”

The firm offers shipping within the continental U.S., Canada and Mexico and has seen its base of owner-operators grow from about 100 in April 2010 to 180 today, Gansman said. The corporate staff will reach 27 during the next month, up from 20 a year ago.

“The real driving force is finding a mechanism to reduce turnover with our owner-operators,” Gansman said. “The story of our growth has been the drivers and what they’ve been able to produce.”

Within two suites in a ShieldsPark office complex in Kernersville, the company handles the logistics of its fleet of trailers moving around the country and provides training and orientation for drivers.

With four acres of land next to the entrance to UnionCrossBusinessPark, the company will gain visibility and a single, more efficient facility with room for growth, Gansman said. The company aims to map out its facility plans within the next year.

Those plans could include a maintenance facility for the company’s trailers so that such functions could be performed internally rather than outsourced. The company is also exploring diversification that could include warehousing and ancillary services such as subassembly, parts sequencing and product transformation, Gansman said.

In that respect, the new location’s proximity to the Caterpillar plant now under construction was a selling point, Gansman said.

“It always helps to be visible and around a corporate presence such as Caterpillar,” Gansman said.
