You Be The Carrier

I see what you are saying now T-Hawk. It would be kind of like what Landstar has where could call with a load or you can load your own. Will you being running credit checks before you let the driver accept the load? Are the drivers going to have to wait for you to be paid to get paid? Just asking out of curiosity.

Well, I have been gone for awhile, and had a few minutes to pop on here and see this thread. Gosh, somethings never change. Thank goodness some people, including myself can change inside. But, it takes something major sometimes for people to change and understand the WHOLE picture instead of just seeing what they want. Well, I thought I had all the answers, and lord and behold I drove for this company and that company and that company and yes even that company and none of them knew what they were doing and they were all selfish and greedy. So my answer, instead of moaning and complaining any longer was - got my own authority. Granted for now I just have a freight broker authority but in most cases that is what PII and some of the others are - since MOST do not have their own company trucks. The point is, I did not know everything, I still don't, and believe me these carriers know how to run a business, it is not easy booking loads, making the customer happy, the driver happy, the owner/operator happy and the upper management happy. Keeping all that damn paper work straight for 5,15,25,50, 100 or 200 loads per day straight is an expense - along with their insurance, their utilities, their office staff expenses, their training expenses, tracking the loads 24/7 is an expense, THEY HAVE EXPENSES as well. They have issues and problems during the day just like the drivers. So, drivers if you think you have all the answers or your tired of your carrier not MAKING MONEY FOR YOU. Then spend $300 to get your own authority and book your own loads. Oh, don't forget the federally required insurance you have to have which runs about 6-$800 per month per truck. Oh and thoses federal highway taxes, and oh never mind....I'm sure you know all that......just like I did......so I thought!

Ark... I'm just speculating. This is a "what if" thread; and that's how I'm responding to it. What I do, once I get there, wouldn't be posted in an open forum either. If, by chance, I find the secret recipe, why would I share it with the world?

Chuckwagon... if we all had ALL the answers, then we'd all be Colonels and none of us would be Privates.

There is only one thing I would do;

I would hire my sales staff, my intake staff and my dispatchers from the fleet of driving contractors. I would not even make them work at my location, with todays technology, it is far cheaper to telecommute than to have office space to that they will take up.

Great idea. It would be easier to hire sales people in different regions to tap into unexplored markets. It would allow them to be close to new customers on a daily basis.

well Landstar does that right now, actually a few do work out of their home.

The point really is to have people who can communicate with both ends of the business to make sure the workflow is connected and moving. I have always maintained that the biggest problem in this industry is hiring people who have zero experience and making them dispatch with a small amount of exposure, ride alongs. They don't get how we have to work, all they see is a run that can be pickup on a Friday in the middle of Chicago at 3PM and taken to Gary within 2 hours while you in Cicero stuck at one of those 5 minute lights. You and I know that this is impossible to do this but there are dispatchers who are clueless.
