What would you do if you were the carrier? What changes would you make? How would you run the show, from dispatch to the top. Put you mouth where you money is.

very true and a good point for alot of us ,alot of driver believe (myself) that the carriers are the only one making money, Im sure they are hurting some like the rest of us, onther point I have heard and read from alot of drivers saying they are going hunger and losing money so I have to ask myself why are they still driving and not parked or looking for a new carriers or diffrent job, just my opinion.

Here's a thought: Get your own authority. Then you WILL be the carrier. You get to deal with other carriers, brokers and shippers.

And whinny drivers!!!

The owners for these carriers some are just as bad as carriers...they want bodies to sit in that truck....why not sell the truck and make money?

True. But you don't need to own a fleet OR lease on a bunch of folks to be your own carrier and do well.

Jeff and fast, don't bother bantering with em. They don't get it. And if they did get it, they wouldn't have the gumption or kahoonas, to start it or finish it. Enjoy what you are doing, and stay away from contractors and drivers.

Speaking of "gumption or kahoonas" (and does that stand for 'cojones', Col?) how come none of you bothered to actually answer the question Louixo asked? Which I thought was a good one, but all y'all do is get all superior about unnamed folks who "whine all the time". OVM, maybe you could take your own advice: if the posters here don't meet your standards, find another site, eh? Cause you sure do a lot of complaining, yourself!
To answer the question as posted: if I were the carrier, it would be my policy to tell the truth - and let the chips fall where they may. That goes for drivers, owners, AND customers.
I would ask every person employed by me: "What obstacles keep you from doing the best job that can be done?" Then I'd pay attention to the replies, and do my damndest to remove whatever legitimate obstacles exist - because I expect the job to be done right, every time. (The occasional simple 'human error' notwithstanding)
Once I had a team that performed their best, I'd stand behind them, 100%, because that would be MY job. And I'd make sure they know that I appreciate their efforts, and not just with empty words, either, but with something they can bank on - literally.
And I bet I'd have the best and most loyal people in the business!

Could find a lot more, too - if I had the time to waste looking.....
Who are "these same people" anyway?

I would require my dispatchers to go on a ride along with one of my drivers periodicly. I would hand them a list of things to pack and tell them they will be back when they get back. The driver would go on his routine as normal. Plus the rest of dispatch wouldn't know which truck the dispatcher was in so they couldn't give that truck a load back through the yard after a couple of days that the truck wouldn't already be getting.

I would also require my drivers to sit in with dispatch. Have them help answer phones and what not. This way everyone feels everyone else's pain. I figure even the slightest taste of what it's like to be on the other side of the phone will help the people understand what the other one is going through.

I would also give performance bonuses. Bonuses that are acheivable even if you have a life off of the road. Like if I owned the trucks I would give fuel mileage bonuses to say thank you by giving the drivers a portion of the money they saved me. As a driver when I was getting a regular bonus that was a decent bonus for good fuel mileage it always made me want to have the best mileage that I could get. That's all I think of right now.
