A team of divers have said they have discovered the remains of the USS Revenge, a ship commanded by the US Navy's famed Oliver Hazard Perry that wrecked near Rhode Island in 1811.

Mr Perry is known for having later defeated the British in a battle near Ohio during a conflict in 1813.

The ship helped shape the war because Mr Perry would not have gone to Ohio if it had not wrecked, the divers said.

Sunday marks the 200th anniversary of the Revenge running aground on a reef.

The divers have called for the Navy to recover the ship's remains, which is made up of objects like cannons and an anchor.

The vessel sank near the coastal village of Watch Hill in Rhode Island prior to the start of the War of 1812, the name given to an early military conflict fought between the US and British Empire that lasted from 1812-1815.

Mr Perry is remembered for having said, "I have met the enemy, and they are ours," following the US defeat of Britain at the Battle of Lake Erie near Ohio during the war.

The Battle of Lake Erie was a major naval victory during the military conflict with Britain, ultimately allowing the US to go on to win the Battle of Thames.

The captain's battle flag also read "Don't give up the ship", which is a symbol of the current US Navy

Dear BBC.

We here in the states do a favor to those who have been "earned" the honor of an OBE by using the word "Sir" or "Dame" in front of their name. Even though we are not required as citizens of the US to recognize any title or the use of the appropriate titles when addressing them, we do so as a gesture of respect.

Even though Britain lost the war of 1812, it should be noted that the use of the title Commodore, along with his surname as in Commodore Perry, would be appreciated in return.

Thank you,

The United States.

Charles Buffum, a brewery owner from Stonington, Connecticut; and Craig Harger, a carbon dioxide salesman from Colchester, Connecticut, claim they set out to find the wreck armed with a metal detector.
Buffum said he's been interested in finding the remains of the Revenge ever since his mother several years ago gave him the book 'Shipwrecks on the Shores of Westerly'. The book includes Perry's account of the wreck.
