Worker's comp?

I am searching online, but thought I'd ask here, also. I'm driving for a small fleet owner. He has told me that he pays for some sort of workers accident insurance, but Nort Carolina requires Worker's Comp. So I'll have to cover the difference between the insurance he pays and the WC amount. He says about $20. per week. NC is supposedly only one of 2 states that this is so.

So far, I haven't found any info to confirm this. I'll call the NC Ins. office on Monday, but does anybody here know?

Thanks.

There ARE inherent costs that go along with being self employed. That is ONE of them IF you choose to be self employed AND covered for a misfortune.

It is a very good idea to cover yourself against accidents. This is a dangerous business and injury accidents do occur.

if he lists you as an employee,he has to cover workmans comp,if your contract labor,a work accident insurance is all you will need

I don't know if Workmans Comp. will cover you .
so many claims of WC in trucking ended up unpaid .
what you need is an Occupational accident insurance .
call OOIDA for a quot (18004445791) they just renegotiate the rates with the insurance provider and can offer a 1 Mil. policy for a very competitive rate .

never do this line of work unless you have a copy of the policy on hand , and at home in a secure place .

never putt anyone between you and your insurance provider ,
what will happened if the Owner don't pay the premium and you have a claim ?

The guy is telling you the truth. I've had to go thru it with drivers that I've had from NC in the past. It doesn't matter to the state that the drivers are "independant contractors"....they still have to carry workman's comp ins.

Good question .
am not an expert , more of a hear say deal .
when i got into Ownership , on one of the training classes , we where told that in many cases Independent contractor will sign a Workmans Comp. , and that in SOME cases , once a claim was filed , the Insurance Carrier will successfully decline the claim in court do to the IC not having an Employee status .

To the best of my understanding NY and NC require work comp on owner operators. I do not know of any other states that do.

If ya gotta have it I guess ya gotta have it. Read the fine print in those policies though. When I had it w/ EGL (now Ceva) I would have to gotten hurt like every 3 years & laid up for 6 months at a time to make it pay off.

I felt this insurance was a rip before I read here that apparently a lot of the claims are denied. So that makes it even worse. You're just throwing your $$ out the window.

That's not a knock on any company as they're just following the laws. It's another area I'm less than thrilled w/ our government though.

In Ohio you can waive the coverage, but it costs $50 every six months to have an account with the Bureau of Workman's Compensation just to have the privilege of waiving the coverage.
