Why do people get into this Business and take off 25% of the year?

aren't we still on strike? did someone call it off? did we get a raise? very poor communication here. i better take another week off until this gets resolved...

They are still negotiating but they want us to do something, so I cleaned my computer/office throwing out all my books and class material on accounting and business because it don't matter in the bigger picture of life, no one can define ROI. ;)

I run single in a Sprinter and because I am not married and no kids, I pretty much stay out all the time. Usually I head for home after 4 weeks out, stay home for about 2 days, then head back out. But since I do stay out a lot, that doesn't mean I don't take time off. Last weekend I took a load to Key West, payed really good and I ended up staying there for an extra day. I usually allow myself one real vacation per year, where I bring the van home and I fly out somewhere. This year its Vegas for a week, leaving Thursday to be the best man at my best friends wedding and also to enjoy the 4 day long, Viva car show. Next year I'm going to Europe with my brother for a month.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about being out on the road and making money but I need my downtime, family time and friend time. I do this job cause of the freedom and the money.

Enemy,

I think you said it the best! I think we all got into this business for the freedom and, of course, the money. But you need to spend time away from the business as well - even if it is just to regroup (your thoughts) and start fresh.

We normally stay out between 4 to 6 weeks and go home for a week. I can't see how running for 13 days and getting 2 days off can give anyone time to get things done. We did that, many years ago, in a company truck and I found it very stressful trying to get everything done at home. But just because it did not work for me, does not mean it doesn't work for someone else.:):)

What if you had the luxury of a 10 hour ( 500 to 600 mile ) run any time you wanted.
Sooo, being the greedy money grubbing person you are you wanted it as often as possible.
HOS says 70hrs/8day rule.
By working 10 on, sleeper 10 off, then immediately going 10 on, you will hit 70 hours on the 6th day.
Take a 36 rest, 34 HOS + the 2 hours left over from the 24, (shower at least once a week, puhleeez).

So the max you can work is 70 hours out of a seven day period including your reset.

7 x 24 = 148. 70 / 148 = aprox 48%

Thats it folks, the most you can do, solo.

But, as a team,( here is how fleet owners make trillions), a team in the same period can work 140 hours or 93% of the time.

Now what if you are a lazy team who takes off 25% of the time..... harummmph.....

140 x .75 = 105 hrs.

That means each lazy team member will only work an average of 57.5 hrs in seven days.
Get a spare job ya bums!!!!!!!

Oh I guess that was an example of being very busy all the time.

Gawd, what would the % of actual hours worked be in realistic expedite setting.

Hmmmmm, I've rethunk my position on what fleet owners make.
Its not trillions, I am reducining you to...... billions.

Paupers.

So if ya wanna make the dough turn the wheels.

The "because we can" thing is the problem, generally. Many "shouldn't". But that is the nature of the beast. Folks get to some neat places in this business, and don't have the sense to enjoy where they are at. All need to try and take meaningful/quality time. Not for things like having a bad week (sniff) and cutt'in for home a few hundred miles. I don't worry about drivers any longer, I just enjoy their stories about the big tuff world on here, and chuckle about how they got there.

Why Bruno? Because they can! An nobody gonna "tell" em nuttin.

I'm glad folks can take time off. I always read posts where people are asking, "which company can I make the most money at". You can make good money at FedEx, Panther, Tri-State and so on. In this business I have tried many different way to take my time off. I ran the 3 weeks out one week off, but I made less money per month than when I was running the 13 day out program.

That is starting out on a Monday and coming home by the next weekend for 3 to 4 days off. It has worked for our teams and they like the ideal of being able to be home sooner. Plus what the truck made for the month went up. Which means more money in everyones pocket.

This question is somewhat like another question that I have tried to explain to some people. "just because you can pay for it does NOT mean that you can afford it"
