WHY DO EXPEDITORS LIE !!!!!!!!!!

just showing ya a scenario!!! that happened this week..first we all no i drive for the bigg cat....i am not stating all expeditors lie!!! lets get that clear now...ok now for the scenario!!! i was sitting at a truck stop, when a expeditor (one of the big 3)pulled in next to me..when he opened his door, it resembled more of a mobile ashtray then it did a expedite van, he strolled over and the first thing he said is that he is getting 4500 miles a week...well that thru up a red flag automatically...as i was showing him proof of my 1500 miles a week average, another expeditor pulled up.(the same company as mr. ashtray was from) she strolled over and as the 3 of us were talking she asked if i had a application for panther after she saw i was averaging 1500 miles a week..i said no that she would have to call a recruitor.. she stated she wasnt getting any miles..(enough to live on anyways)..well all of a sudden mr.ashtray said he wasnt doing to good either..as we were talking, mr.ashtray asked if there was a bus station around, i replied i didnt no, he said he was thinking of taking a bus home, quitting and abandoning his vehicle at the truck stop.. i told him he should drive it to an agreeable location with the owner, and that if he abandons it, it would go on his record and he would never drive for another owner.well he got all huffy and went into the truck stop..as i was talking to mrs, expeditor i got a load, so i had to leave, i dont no if the owner had to come and pick up his mobile ashtray or not...i do no he would have had to power wash the whole inside of it...if it was my van i probably woulda burned it...anyways my conclusion is that there are people , that will fabricate (lie) about anything to make themselves feel more important,or to move themselves up there self indulged hierarchy pole...even if it unknowingly makes them look stupid.....morale of the story if there is one, keep it simple, keep it honest, and keep it straight...oh ya you represent the company you drive for!!! soap is cheap, showers are free

I think you are not understanding that he wasn’t lying to you but to himself.

There are people that have to justify their decisions and can’t admit to making a mistake. I know of two that will tell you that they are doing great but in reality I have made more money sitting around and taking cr*ppy runs then they have with their team runs across the country because of their truck payment is 3 times mine and their costs to run their truck is high - they are lying to themselves about how well they are doing but will not admit to the mistake buying a $265K truck.

The other thing to remember is that there is always something about people who belong to a group will be the first to complain among themselves but when a stranger is present, it is the opposite. There is a scientific term for this but maybe someone can tell us what it is.

I agree with Greg; some people talk for their own benifit, to make themselves feel better about their situation. On the whole I find most experienced expediters to be honest hard-working people who will go out of their way to offer help or encouragement based on honesty

Expediters, like every other category of people, are like snowflakes: all the same, but each one different. For every one who speaks truth, there's one who lies, etc, ad nauseum. All we can do is judge each individually, based on what we believe to be the truth, and behave accordingly.
All too often, though, we have to behave like Walter Mitty, with our real reactions confined to our imagination, while reality is quite different, lol. Like when I got stuck in a lineup of trucks, waiting to get into the fuel pumps. We couldn't see what the holdup was, but one bigrig was backing into one of the unpopular spots directly behind the pumps, while 6 or 7 trucks sat waiting. Even with the aid of a 'director', he backed & forthed quite a few times, before parked straight. When we were able to pull forward, I saw two things that made me see red: first, that the truck backing up was the only reason for the delay, and second, that there were at least 4 empty spaces on either side of him, so he had all the room in the world to back into. When he got out of his truck, I REALLY wanted to say to him: "If you spent even half as much time learning to back up as you obviously do at the buffet, we'd all be happier, and just BTW, people with a very large round body shape should not wear bright striped shirts, cause the resemblance to a beach ball is just too comical..."
Of course I said nothing at all, (I was in a hurry, you know), but at least in my imagination, I felt a lot better, and was able to walk away laughing.
That Walter Mitty was a pretty wise fellow, I think.;)

Alright Cheri!

I bet you a lot of people don't know who he was.

anyone who claims they average over 2000 or 2500 miles a week i automatically view with skepticism that is for those in vans or sprinter are you going to get those kind of miles sure maybe occaisionaly but if you average that weekly please tell me what company so i can go to work for them yesterday as for mr ashtray that goes back to professionalism which most people have but i see so many men and woman out there that if i was the customer i would refuse to let my freight get put on there vehicle just my opinion

"Why do expediters lie"

Seems to me most of the ones that do lie, are trying to inflate an existing ego, or are in a state of denial. Many times it is both. Every so often you will see a post or two that falls into this category.
You story is another example of how a story starts one way, and ends with constantly being predispatched and making three dollars a mile.
Your van driver sounds like he kinda falls in that category.

Cheri, sheeeeeeesh, some of us lousy tractor/trailer backers look just like that! (I could do it, but it just took a LOOOOOOOOOOOOG time to back) LOL Hummm...straight trucks are so much easier!!

Things have sure changed over the past ten years. I've been out of expediting for a few years, but back in "the good ol' days" 2000 to 2500 miles was exactly what I expected and almost always received. These days with the HOS changes, decline of the big three, a glut of new expedite companies, and an overall decline in manufacured goods in the U.S., expediting just ain't what it used to be.

I wasn't any better at it either :+ but I didn't hold anyone else up, at least. One of my very first deliveries, backing into the dock required blocking the street, which, at 0645, was busy, with people getting to work. Knowing I couldn't just whip it into the dock, (between the building and a support pillar, no less), in any hurry, and the pressure of people waiting would just make me more nervous, I did the only thing I could: paid another driver $10 to back it in, lol, after seeing him just zoom his into the dock. Like Clint Eastwood said: you gotta know your limits!
And then, I practiced whenever I could, and though I never got really good at backing a 53 ft trailer, I never needed to pay a proxy again. ;)

Cheri,
I need to read more of the posts and stop looking for key words.

I have witnessed a lot of the "I have a big truck and need to get into the spot while making everyone wait until I perfectly put the truck and trailer between the lines, even though there are 5 spots open and I can just pull into a spot to let everyone get by and then straighten up my truck to be picture perfect" in my wanderings. I can not understand why it takes two people to park a truck in the middle of three open spots and they always seem to end up in one of the end spots because they can't back up. HOW HARD IS IT?

What happens is that they need a solid viewpoint to have in their mirrors when they back in. Empty spaces are like the dessert, nothing to guide on.

Rich,
I understand about having a reference point but some of what I have seen this is not the issue.

I've always had an easier time backing into a tight spot than I do a wide open spot. Guess I'm just weird.

Quite possibly he was thinking 4500 miles per month?

Who knows?

Honest mistake...Anxiety...Frustration...The Need For Acceptance

What does it really matter in the long term?

Major trucking firms have recovery teams, because drivers are recruited and they often do not have a real grasp as to hardships of OTR driving. It comes with the territory. All professions have certain psycho/social aspects that are avocation related.

How can you really know for sure until you experience all of the aspects of any given profession? Certainly, you can have some idea as to the pros and cons, but until you actually walk the walk, you'll really never know if you can adapt to a particular environment.

PS. Greg, I believe you may be thinking of Social Identity Theory.
