who says the union is killing American automakers?

A tip sent us to the blog of Dr. Mark J. Perry, professor of economics and finance at the University of Michigan, who points out that hourly union workers at the Big 3 make on average 57.6% more in a year than a university professor with a Ph.D. Using figures from the automakers themselves, Dr. Perry tells us that a union worker at Ford makes $141,020/year including wages and benefits. A worker at General Motors makes $146,520/year and one at Chrysler earns $151,720/year. According to another report he cites, the average annual salary for a college professor in 2006 was $92,973, which happens to be close to the $96,000/year a Honda, Nissan or Toyota worker makes in the U.S.

$12,000 a month... yeah... poor unions are sooooooo underpaid.

Boy Leo, what can I say?

Finally someone actually posted (especially from Ann Arbor) something I have been saying for a long long time.

But let's not forget something else that is a major factor in the killing of the big three (can I say that yet?) - a lack of a real domestic product that sells. The same place that hosted the information that you provided also has a report floating around about the problems in the domestic auto market which is directly tied to the lack of a real competitive product, the lease mentality (which includes the problems of the American consumer and their need to be in debt all the time) and the manufactures need to cry about health care and how it is hurting them which is not a factor in the report.

A local morning news program in Northern Mich used to have an available jobs segment every morning. One of the school districts was looking for counselors. With a MASTERS degree starting salary was 25-28k. Things really are convoluted when nothing but a pulse and respiration will get you several times that.

You know the auto companies want degreed workers on their lines, which if they really knew what was good for them and think they have problems with the union now, they would take high school kids on the line instead.

Its hard to bolt tires on new cars. It requires years of expensive training and schooling. Sheesh, can you really blame them for getting paid so much, and requiring a 15 minute break every hour or so? ;-)
