Both Highway and Leo are correct. Unless people will share their reason for their choice then... it's how high is high.
This can be a valuable discussion only if you respond with some of the reasons that you drive what you drive and don't drive one of the other types of vehicles.

So another way to ask the question is If you had twenty-five percent down for the expediter of your choice and had the necessary endorsements on your license, and the level of experience required which one would you choose? Which one would you stay away from and why?

25% down and my choice!

Sprinter2500 Van, extended, extra tall, with built in sleeper.
As said in other comments, This is my choice due to not having to deal with DOT regs. Would not move up to C, D or E units, unless expedite starts doing "oversized loads.

My choice would be a DR with Liftgate, Lift Axle, Reefer and Data Logger. 450 HP and 10 Speed Auto Shift. At least an 84 inch sleeper.
I could run just about anything except an E load, park most anywhere I want, climb the mountains with ease and be very comfortable while parked.
I,m only $175,000 short right now.

C/D units have it the toughest right now. Too many out there trying to get work stealing it from b units and each other. Then there's all the regs etc to follow and the hassles with the mto boys looking for anything wrong.

C/Vs have it good (if they're getting work), the lower reg level, many break the number of hours driving if they feel good. Park almost anywhere! I love being able to go down a narrow lane at a remote lake and find a spot to throw the line in the water sitting on my folding chair and take an hour to relax. Can't do that in them bigger buggies. Need something at a store, easier to pull in in a van and go inside. No parking in the back 40 as I need too many parking spaces. Nice and easy and depending on load depends on sleep space (in my case).

I've heard some C unit drivers accusing Sprinters of that.

Yeah I said it.

It is true, there has been loads handed to vans that should have gone on my truck.

This happens with the present company and happened a bit with the previous company. Both of them are exact opposites in their function and form and the present allows me a lot of needed flexibility.

When I read all these things about people getting a reefer truck with a lift gate, I know they will be tied into that truck with only two companies. Many don't get the PM cost for that reefer or box and think they will make millions in this business. C unit, like the one sitting next to me last night, has one and only one purpose. With their 12 feet of space and their 6500 lbs capacity, they are locked into a limited amount of work.

I am in a fleet of something like 7000 trucks, it is a company where I get everything from ltl to very high value stuff, I compete with vans and box trucks. Some box trucks have more cargo space than I do and haul a little under half the weight. The real problem is HOS but again it is really not bad being one step below those independent people, but a lot better being above the company people.

Regardless what people will say, this is a really simple question that has a simple answer - it all depends on the company that one chooses to contract with. If they use C/D units, like FedEx then the work will be there but if they use vans, would you think it would be better in a D unit waiting 4 days for a call?

As for the best thing to have - it is the tractor and trailer combo. It may be one of those things where you can't park at McDonalds or your favorite eating place but again this is a business and these are tools, so what.

Vans are best suited for those with a second income, ie; retirement or working spouse with a great job. If you are based in a busy express center you can DH home for a morereasonable cost. Allows you to work on "honeydew" list instead of killing time in a truck stop. Having driven A B C & Greyhound, I can see the advantage to each, but it always comes down to what suits your particular lifestyle neeeds'

That is the entire story, eh OVM? We do what we like. We accept whatever warts come with it because it suits our needs.

No question about it. Vans have it the hardest, because that's what I drive, and how could I ***** and moan if someone was having a harder time of it than me.

I like my van....It is right for me...

The same goes for me as well.Wish I would of done it earlier in my carreer in this awesome business..

But as I am reading these posts,And the thread title,I really dont think anyone of us has it harder than any one else out there, just different circumstances to deal with.As I used to complain about my sleeper before I got used to it,I now see homeless people who would give their soul to sleep in a space as small as this.So who am I to complain? I feel very fortunate for what little I may have as to what others only dream about...You know what I am saying? Bottom line: we could be alot worse off than we are.Than God for what we already have, and dont take it for granted.

I tried em all. I hated the semi and loved the comfort and convenience of the strait truck but I liked the Sprinter the most. It's just great to go anywhere you want when you are empty. I got to see a lot more of this country than I would have in any other sized vehicle and I made decent money too. The only problem was it was just as expensive to repair as the strait truck.

I to use to drive tractor trailer for 32 years, and the I drove for an owner for 1 year in a E-350 Ford van, and bought my own Sprinter. I enjoy life on the road again, mostly because no log book & DOT messing with you. And now I have Sue now my wife riding with me all I can say is Life is Grand, It is so different to share your life with someone who enjoys OTR driving as much as you do.

But to say one group has it worse than the other it is hard, but if I had to pick one, I would choose vans only because there is very little space to sleep when loaded with 2 skid and to try to rest in the drivers or passenger seat is nearly impossible.

It's almost like being married, lol, except I don't have to deal with DOT every day. And when I do, sometimes I even come out ahead [2 'no violations' inspections in one week recently = bonus money!]
Now if you'd asked which drivers have it tougher, I'd vote for solo females, particularly the ones who are small. And left handed!

im right handed ......... does that count?? lol

i went to truck driving school......... drove a TT for a bit..
then came to panther......
thought about a van a few times....
but like the str8 trucks..... cuz i like my space.
parking is sometimes easier not always..
and DOT . well... if you not doing anything wrong and keep up with ur logs like ur suppose too... then shouldnt be a problem.
