Part of the route I now cover includes Harlan,KY. Deliver lots of 55 gallon drums of DEF for coal trucks and gigantic pieces of earth-moving equipment which use DEF. The coal industry uses vast amounts of industrial gases, special grade oils and lubricants trucked in nightly by drivers such as myself.
Anyone born and raised in Appalachia is forever molded by that experience. There's no getting over the majesty of the mountains. Maybe a sailor who spent a lifetime at sea feels the same about an open expanse of blue water. It's an umbilical cord unable to be cut. A tribute to the persistence of memory.
The haunting music of Appalachia oftens reminds of hardship and loss.
Here's a music video I found by surprise featuring Kappa Danielson singing "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" accompanied by her twin sister on vocals. Kappa's daughters playing mandolin and fiddle show a lot of promise. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHhTExqZitI
