Where does 10,000 gvw fall?

If I purchase a 10,000 gvw chassis, is it subject to DOT or not? In other words, is it 10,001 and above for DOT control, or 10,000 and above? Would appreciate it if someone who really knows would set me straight. Thanks!!!!

The only exception to your statement would be if you were to transport Hazardous Material. You would then need to stop at scales and carry a log book. Be careful when you see some scales that say "all commercial carriers" must enter scale. If your loaded and are displaying your company logos you should pull into those scales. I hope I didn't confuse you. These are the rules as I know them.

According to the DOT, a vehicle of 10k or less gvwr is not a commercial vehicle and is exempt from the FMCSA regulations.

In the state of Kentucky you will have to enter scales even though you are under 10,000 and are consider doing commmerical business.
