I guess some people may need to re-read some of this thread. I DID say no to the safe/legal question and that's when they were caught off-gaurd. I knew before they did that I couldn't make the whole run. That's what this whole post was about; How can they be surprised when a driver says that he can't do a run that far exceeds their rule of thumb of 517 miles in 11 hours.
Bail me out?? How is that? Because I took a run I couldn't complete on my own without running illegally? So the first driver is at fault for the run being more than he/she can run legally in 11 hours? Well I never looked at it that way. I guess next time I get the second half of a swap, I'll be rude to the other guy because I have to bail him out at 0-dark-thirty.
As to me being etched in their memory...good, I hope I am. Because I could have said nothing and ran out of hours on the side of the highway and left them with a real problem on thier hands. Instead, I was being a TEAM PLAYER and alerting them to the fact that I would run out of hours BEFORE it got to that point. Obviously they had no clue or they wouldn't have been so surprised. Besides, the other driver was more than happy to take the "scraps" because it got him moving after sitting for a day. Would he have been happier to look for me on some off-ramp and do the swap there?
I have gotten my fair share of the short end of the run, too. I've had plenty of doing all the deadhead, paying all the tolls, and passing the torch to the other guy who gets all the good miles.
Apparently I should accept a 650 mile run and just keep my mouth shut. I'll just go until I have to shut down and send them a message telling them where I'm at and let them worry about it. Yeah, that's the way to do it.
