You're right. Both are the same thing. But one is a means to an end, whereas the other is a way to make money (or not make money) for the blind.

So who's the bad guy if the means satisfies the end?

I live in SD and want to go home and they have a cheap run say going to Fargo ND...Am I supporting cheap shippers or taking care of my business?.
Now reverse this and your the one stuck out there...you are not going to turn it down on principle are you????? You'd DH for nothing rather then take the buck???

So whos taking the cheap frieght? Maybe the driver stuck in Philly that has to be home in Houston or maybe the one stuck in Detroit who has to go home to Atlanta....Its a big land somewhere some place someones taking one for s good reason in thier mind.

A backhaul is defined as a load picking up from your delivery point going back to at least the area you started from, cheap freight is just that cheap freight, the agents know when the have you in a tight spot and they use that to put even more money into their pockets, it ain't fair but thats the way it is in this cutthroat business. The only way to stop it is to do as OOIDA says, "say NO to cheap freight", if it is a true backhaul then it can be discounted after all you will not have any deadhead in it,but if it is a cheap load in sheeps clothing you are doing a disservice to everyone in the industry if you take it without a REAL good reason,ie, going home taking you to another good paying load that you are dispatched on ect,but to run it just to say you got a run isn't a good reason, if you are like me and are in the business to make money and not just gas money we are all going to have to come together on this

Who's fault is it if it's a means to an end? I don't know if anyone's at fault. You want to go home, you're willing to take less for a run to get home. All depends on how much you want to pay for a ticket home (how low you're willing to go). Personally, I'd never take a load for 'gas money'. Has to be some kind of bux for the pocket in order for me to take their freight. If you take it, and later regret it, I guess you could consider it your fault. Your conscience will let you know. ;)

As far as ppl who run cheap freight just to run... how can they have a conscience if they have no brain??? :D
