What's a thread?

I keep seeing the word 'thread' used in forums but haven't figured out what it means. Someone please enlighten me, thanks---

One dictionary definition is:

something continuous or drawn out: as a : a train of thought.

In this instance you started a thread by asking the question "whats a thread". The thread will continue, as in my response, as additional posters offer answers to your thread.

This thread may be short-lived. Once terryandrene speak on a subject, there's not much more that needs to be said.;-)
