Whats a good deal?

I have been in the trucking industry for 12 years but never did expedite and I am interested in getting into it. I have talked to a coupld of owners and got a couple different deals one said I would make 55% of the gross the truck makes and I pay the fuel and tolls. Is this a good deal? What is a good standard deal to try and get or get to as close as possible from an owner? Also this is based on driving a straight truck.:+

There are many good posts on this you'll find as you work your way back through the forums. Anything less than 60/40 plus 100% of the fsc to the side buying the fuel isn't a good deal. Keep reading and studying and good luck.

I see what is a fuel surcharge? Sorry if I seem like such a newbie like I said I drove in trucking for 12 years but for a company and either got paid by the mail or hourly never had to deal with the business end of it if you know what I mean. One owner told me he would give me 55% I pay the fuel and the surcharge I also pay tolls. He said that it breaks down to about I would make around 80 cents a mile and after fuel 50 of that 80 cents would be in my pocket. :+

Fuel Surcharge (FSC) is an adjustment that the shipper pays so the fuel is at a set level for the driver/owner/truck, usually around $1.25 a gallon. It is based on the price of fuel and is a percentage of the load price, right now I heard 19.5%. Some companies will put it as a per mile amount, like FedEx starting Monday - 12 cents a mile for Vans - sort of.....

Sorry for the bad explination, I have a horrible headache.

Well if ths shipper pays it then why will I have to pay it? Like I said the owner I mentioned earlier said that I would pay for fuel the surcharge.

tbird, you don't pay the fuel surcharge the shipper pays it and it is added to the amount that is paid for the load.

And if you are the one buying the fuel then you should get 100% of the fuel surchage, not just 55%.

Also as LDB say's,if you are buying the fuel you should be getting 60%.Shop around, there are better deals out there.

what is the different units what does the letters mean like D E or what ever the other letters are that are used to describe the different vehicle types? The unit he was talking about he did not say how long of a box it had but it did have a condo sleeper and it is a straight truck.

A D unit is a straight truck, can legally be up to 40 feet long. A E unit is a T/T combination. A C unit is also a straight truck with a smaller cargo box anywhere from 12 -16 feet, while D units usually require a cargo box of 20-24 feet. Some companies require wheight capacities such as being legal to haul a maximum of 13,000 pounds for a D and 5,000 pounds for a C.

Ahhhh ok no he did not say what type it was just that it was a straight truck with a condo sleeper but I will ask him and any other owners I talk to in the future. Here is a good one I got today I am thinking about doing until I get into a straight truck gig. This company who does expedite does cars also and will give me 58% of the pay for a delivery I pay for gas use my own car and he says his car delivered adverage around 600 to 800 a week depending how much you hussle and how good you can find your way around. This is in the Chicagoland area I am going to check it out what do you guys think?
