What would you do?

My Garmin had me running 278 mph in a TT, maybe he didn't know he was driving that fast because he wasn't. What did his mpg look like?

Bad. He was complaining about the poor mpg. But anyway, since he didn't try to defend himself about this speed matter, it's clear that he knew what he was doing.

I discovered if your gps falls off the dash the hi speed will change giving a false reading clear the speed and drop it on a pillow and see for yourself
Tk

I took one of mine on a flight once and popped a 553 MPH top speed!!
I'm easily entertained. LOL!!

I am interested in one point. The Garmin showed the top speed to be 90+ mph. Did the unit show consistently high MPH, or was it possible he touched 90 briefly then backed down? Not that this makes much difference in one sense, some vehicles get a bit unstable at high speed and it doesn't take much to lose control at those speeds, I'm just curious. If the average speed showed higher than it should have been, that's a whole different thing than saying it showed a maximum speed of 90+.

Some ECM's record speeds as well....along with RPM's and the corresponding fuel pressure to maintain such speed.... IF you have any doubts at all.....

I mentioned that I gave him two GPS units, of course one at the time. First one had 93, the second 94. So, I think it's clear that this guy was hitting hard the gas pedal. I never tried that kind of speed, 'cept in Germany where I guess you know there's no speed limit (I reached 180 kmh)...

The info was very accurate: the GPS showed me the speed records. He didn't know the GPS does that... he was complaining about the GPS as being inaccurate, outdated, etc., so I gave him a brand new one. On the first GPS, the top speed was 93 mph. I thought maybe he just passed another vehicle and that's why the high speed. One week later I checked the new GPS, this time it was 94. When I told him about his speed, he said "I didn't realize I was driving that fast".

I'm confused by the opening statement that the driver constantly drove over 90 mph. You then cite two top speed instances. Could have been a downhill pass which a gps can be off by quite a bit. You used a gps speed to send them packing? Were they good drivers in other aspects of the job or was this the straw to rid yourself of them?

IF I were a fleet owner of CV's, I would speed limit them to 80 mph right off the top.....sprinters are factory limited to about 84 MPH.

Recently been following my driver speeds,,(for what little he seems to work) and he has been topping 70 mph fairly frequently. Sent him a e-mail concerning his reported speeds and then checked mine for lastnight..It had tracked me at speeds Im fairly certain I dont drive that fast as a rule,,esp the last one posted below as Im thinking there isnt a road within 30 miles that can handle those speeds or at least the route I came down and into town where I dropped.

Now below is one of the reason Im not sure I can stock in the tracking systems..You can see I am MT with the Ign off but am still moving @ 30mph.

Fleetvision is NOT accurate....no way anyone should use it for drivers speed....the wife has tracked me with cruise set for a few hours....every ping is incorrect....

Now ya fill me in after the fact I sent him a lil note to tone it down..

Im fairly new to following this Fleetvision thingy..Why would anyone Maintain or pump money into maintaining something that doesnt work correctly or give false readings?

I'm still more interested in averages, rather than maximum speed. My GPS may show that I hit a top speed of 75 mph, but that I averaged 53 mph while moving. A top speed may very well be an aberration, however the average moving speed could be more of a tell-tale. If you just took a look at the top speed indicated, said "OMG!!!" and fired the guy, it might not be quite right. If the average speed was too high though, then you've got a better case. Anybody--- even you-- can get a heavy foot on occasion which would give a high top speed.

My unit shows total miles, top speed, average moving, average overall during the entire trip including stops, moving time, stop time and total time. All of these together can tell whether the lead-foot was a single incident or if it was a habitual way of driving. My Chevy van is fast if I choose to do it, but it's not an Indy car and shouldn't be treated that way.

How about this: Your speedometer is likely a bit off. It will tend to read higher than you're actually going by a mile or two at 65. At least, that's what I've found to be consistently true. Indicate 65 on the speedometer, radar guns and GPS units will agree that it's actually 63 or thereabout. I wouldn't sweat a mile or two variance between speedometer indicated and actual, though.

A sprinters is off by about 3-4 MPH...I allowed for that....

Thats one of the biggest reason I fired a note off to him..It was not so much his speeds as the fact I dont think we have roads that are good enought to handle these speeds anymore and congestion we are seeing more and more of everyday. By slowing down it will slow down the repairs on rattles and busted plastic items,,suspension parts, etc etc. I dont want him driving it like he stole it.

Maybe its just me but I perfer traffic out in front of me and going away from me. And by running faster I am sure drivers are running directly behind someone else and that when things go wrong.

It was the straw. Plus he had a "loaded" driving history while being an 18 wheeler. And as a 4 wheeler, with his personal car. He wasn't born to be a pro driver.

One cannot change in one month the average built in three years.
And I didn't fire him, we both agreed to end the contract.

What's done is done. Couldn't you have looked at the time he left with a load and the time he arrived. Check the miles against the time to figure out his average speed?. He's either speeding or making a ton of pit stops on the way and speeding to make up the difference.

P.S. A couple of years ago there was a member on here who bragged he drove 90 mph on a regular basis in a cargo van. As I remember all who responded said they hoped not to be on the same road way with him.
