What the heck is a hot-shot?

I keep coming across this term "hot-shot". Yesterday at Costco a driver told us hot-shots are just expediters. I just nodded like I agreed but wanted to double check it at the real source. Forgive me for not looking in the archives. I'm pressed for time and I know lots of you having nothing better to do than reply to this post and either provide an intelligent answer or flame my *** for not checking the archive. Either way, I hope you still have a very nice day and may lots of dry roads come your way! :)

Well, TC, I've got time, sigh. (Turned down a 400 mile 'van' load - let a van have it, maybe they could make a profit on it, but I can't.)
Hot shots are generally used to mean emergency runs that can be done in a less structured environment, ie: with a pickup truck. I did some in my personal vehicle in Louisiana back in the 80's, and it took me awhile to discover expediting, because I didn't think hotshots would be big in Ohio, when I moved back there.
I really liked putting my occupation as 'hot shot driver' on my tax forms, lol. Particularly as my main job was 'morgue attendant' - what a great combination, eh? ;)

Okay I guess there is a worse job out there.

Oh, there's plenty of worse jobs, but that wasn't one of them - the morgue was the place where all the unsaleable merchandise (in a warehouse that sold to drug & variety stores) was kept until credit was issued for it. At which point the sales reps would instruct me to ship the stuff back to them, or 'dispose' of it however I liked. Since much of the merchandise was unsaleable due to it's packaging, rather than contents, my preferred method of disposal was taking it home. :D
Much of it was then donated to the Salvation Army's homeless shelter, which made us all happy.
The job paid little, but the 'perks' were unbeatable.

Thank you jaminjim!

/sigh My post got hijacked by a morgue discussion! That does not seem like a good sign! lol :)

But I will relinquish my thread and hereby state that this thread is now certified to continue discussing morgues. lol :)

Hey - I answered the question first, didn't I, before hijacking your thread? :D
Personally, I prefer the term hotshot to expediting, it being more self explanatory, but I can see where corporate decision makers might prefer expediting - it just sounds more businesslike.
(I didn't have anything else to say about the morgue)

You did? I didn't even look! Hah. Well I was wrong and I retract what I said about the hijack! lol :)

I don't know, I kind of like the "expediter" tag but in the trenches I can see where "hot-shot" makes more sense.
