Okay, we have now received 4 emails from NY State Motor Vehicles. The subject is about "tickets" issued.

They show up in spam. Is this a "phishing" thing? They have attachments.

Where did they get my email? Why would they not call? What kid of garbage is this? Anyone else seen anything like this?

Emails are not private addresses, they get it a lot of different ways - especially if you have Gmail, Yahoo mail or some other mail service.

If you want Turtle or I to explain it, we could.

They are pretty common. If they were real, I would have been thrown in jail years ago. The real ones will only come US mail.

I did not open the attachments. I was pretty sure they were BAD. Thanks for the conformations.

Lousy spammer thieves swindling as many thousand people as they possibly can. I'd say what should be done to felons like that but it upsets the delicate sensibilities of some weak folks so I'll just know it instead.

If it is a scam e-mail, it makes ya wonder where they got your e-mail address from in the first place...........

What are the odds that a Truck Driver from Michigan, or other states that drivers are from that drive all over the country, would be getting such e-mails that are covering traffic tickets in the state of New York.

Makes ya wonder which trucking related website/discussion board is sharing/selling your e-mail addy with others...doesn't it. ;)

I'm sorry Leo, but if you are that convinced that your FILL IN THE BLANK is sending you an email and you are so inclined to fill in the form that looks like a real form, then it is not the fault of those who are sending out the email.

Think I was pointin' fingers here??? Not the case at all......

Probably most here are registered at and/or are discussion board members on several several "Trucking" related websites all over the internet. I for one sure am...... ;)

If everybody here was getting the e-mails, then more and more members would be speaking up. I for one have never received the e-mails, so I have no belief at all that EO is in the practice of what I spoke of above.

Or....did I just hit Dales guilty conscious? :D

Brisco,
Maybe you know this already but I can let you in on a (couple) little secret(s).

If someone has an yahoo email account (or what ever), many times people use their names in some form or another, like an abviation of their first name; jsmith. There are programs out there that take iterations of names and send emails out in groups. For instance I have a catchall account on my servers which I get to see a lot of fantastic email - most are from "banks" asking someone on my server to send them their personal info. The server is setup to copy those emails for security reasons but also bounce all of them back to the sender so to look like they are rejected (yes there is a reason for this). So these programs use iterations of names they pull out of databases or mass opt-in mailing lists to create a base of data. What gets bounced back usually gets deleted and what doesn't gets put into the list.

The other thing are the lists, which you seem to be pointing at. When anyone opts in to say a newsletter or some other service, your email address is now their property. SO a lot of places, like say Bestbuy who you just applied for that online rebate for that new Ipad3, you have no control over what is done with that email address. Bestbuy may say they don't sell info but got to tell you that if that rebate is a third party deal, it has no control over it.

Nope, my "conscious" is clear... just tired of seeing the inference here.

Not just truckers have gotten these e-mails. People without vehicles have gotten them. People who have never been to New York have gotten them. People who have never been to the United States have gotten them.

This e-mail first went out to millions of e-mail addresses on July 5, 2011. It was again sent out on on Aug. 17, 2011, adding more addresses to the list. It was sent out again in September, and now in October. On July 6th, the day after the first mailing, the New York State Police issued an alert warning recipients the SPAM e-mail to not click on the attached zip file, because it "likely" contains a computer virus. The email did not originate from the State Police or any other government agency, the alert said.
