What makes a good owner?

I currently have two leased 2004 Chevy Express 3500 extended vans for which I may need to find drivers. What would make me a good owner?

Conversly, what qualities must a driver have to ensure a mutually successful and profitable relationship between owner and driver?

I think a good, convenient method for Driver pay - would be at the top of the list. Possibly a debit card that the owner loads the drivers pay onto - the driver can easily withdraw it from any ATM.

Provide your driver all the capabilities that the carrier allows for you. i.e. independent status for the purpose of load acceptance decisions, layover location decisions, reasonable out-of-servce and deadhead to home decisions. Establish minimum standards of operation of your van; provide help in achieving those standards but don't micromanage the drivers.

Keep the van well maintained and have a contingency plan for all possible breakdown/repair scenarios. Don't expect the driver to use his money to effect repairs or get to your chosen repair site. Get the driver into a motel if overnite repairs are required through no fault of the driver.

Get together with your drivers on a periodic basis to discuss issues related to your relationship and the operating principles to which you have agreed, oral and written, preferably the latter.

In essence, Do unto others...

Give your drivers copies of everything you get from your company that
relates to pay, so the drivers can see what was paid for the load, what was deducted by the company, miscellaneous pay such as detention time and extra drops......prevents questions as to "Did you ever pay me for that time I did whatever?????. Also shows the drivers that
you don't hide anything or keep any of their funds behind their backs.
Also allows the drivers to monitor the paychecks, so that they can remind you that neither of you got paid for something that was done a while ago, and that saves both of you from missing pay for a load.

I would like some information on small claims court The owner doent want to pay us for runs we did with panther 11 Since they want talk to you about the money situtations. The drivers are left out to defend for themself. You have to have plenty of money to work for panther 11 Or starve to death I would not do any drivers this way. And i would not let owner operators do druvers this way. If MR DAN is reading . I would clean house on these owner operators. Because somewhere down the road paybacks are rough. I( know i will get my money somehow,You dont get away with doing people this way. It burns me up to think you have to wait for months to collect your money.
