What is it?

Just before we shut down we were starting to have trouble starting the truck. I assumed it was the batteries. They are 40 months old. They showed full but I often had to run the APU for a bit to get it to start. The voltage was OK, low amps.

Had the batteries checked, 2 bad, 2 weak. Had them replaced. It is still hard starting.

I was told that they think it is a "crank sensor". Sound right? I have to take it to another shop to have it looked at as soon as I get it back.

Joe,

It has a crank sensor and a camshaft sensor. One of them reads rpm. The ECM has to "see" that the engine is turning before it will fire the injectors.

It could be your starter as well. Next time you go to start it, turn one of your cab lights on. If the light really dims while cranking, the starter may be drawing too many amps. Get the amperage draw checked.

How's the a/c issue going???

They had to replace the condenser and dryer. It is nice and cold now.

The truck started good this after noon. I still think it was just a battery problem. We will find out in the morning when the second shop looks at it.

For my straight it was the batteries and the alternator.....then again my voltage was very low.

Mine was the sprinter vans with the crankshaft sensor problem. Seems to have been the wiring

The truck is starting fine. I believe that it was just the batteries. I will just have to keep an eye on it. The second shop could not find anything wrong with it.

Los: did you get the AC done in Monroe? Mine needs replaced, [it hits 98 in the sleeper now], and the Boss said the Freightliner in Monroe, if I get up there [and I will, lol].

Cheri,

Have a better place for you to take the truck. It's where I take all of mine now. 5 miles from the yard. PM me if you want the name and address.

Wolfie: consider yourself PMd, and please send details.

Apologies for getting off topic, but if I'd PMd LOS, I wouldn't have heard from Wolfman.....
Back on track now. :)

No, I get my A/C and reefer work done at Scott's Commercial Truck repair. They are a 24 hour shop. They are in Toledo on Benore RD just off Alexis, near the Pilot

OK, here is the "Rest of the story". The Freightliner in Monroe called me last night at 11:15, my truck was done.

It WAS the crank sensor, but it was working fine. There was nothing wrong with the sensor it self. It seems that when they replaced my clutch a few weeks back that they had some how loosened the sensor. As time when on it worked itself to a point where it was only making contact part of the time. That explains why sometimes it would start and not others.

It started fine this morning. I will feel better after it has been started several times over several days. I sure hope they were right. It was not expensive to fix, no parts needed. Just 1.5 hours of labor.

Assuming nothing else goes wrong we go back in service on Monday at noon.
