What do you think?

Hi all,

I was just curious about something. What would a job have to pay you for you to quit expediting & take the job? I realize some jobs offer bennies & some don't. I'd like to keep this an apples to apples comparison as much as possible. So for this hypothetical job, how much per hour (or week, whichever way ya wanna figure it) would it take to have you take another job? You'd have to buy your own benefits just like ya do w/ expediting.

A few tidbits here. This is assuming a job you'd enjoy. It would be a local job. For some being local would mean they'd take a lil less & for others it means they'd need more to stay home.

To answer my own question: $600 net/week would def. make me switch. $500 I'd have to think about it, but would depend on other factors. Anything under that & I'd continue expediting.

Be well,
Danny

funny you should ask this question. I've been thinking about this one quite a lot lately. My daughter recently got married and we are now empty nesters. The wife would like me home more now because she's alone most of the time.
I think the $600 per week figure would work for a while. Especially if there were some benefits. It would really be great to go fishing and camping again and to catch up on the honey-doo jobs.

In a Van yes you are real close. For a D unit its much higher, and the main reason is I really like what I am doing.

Good luck I realize questions like this get a mind in motion and its gona get harder for you to continue in Expediting with this thought on your mind. Business has slowed and for that I cannot blame anyone for having those thoughts.

What do I think about the mystery money job? Well from 1984-2004 I was on the road driving for a Van lines type of company and sick of it most of the time until I met a friend here locally that installed flooring.

There was no major licensing involved, 300.00 to become incorporated plus the state fees.( so you can buy tools wholesale etc) I dont travel any further than about 25 miles from the house. I work average days of 8 hours. There are less than 3 employees so no need for Workers comp. I spend about 30 bucks a week for advertising and maybe 12 for gas.

I realize that it might not be a great job up north in the cold weather mixing mud in a bucket outside etc but the payoff is about 2.75- 5.00 per square foot to lay flooring. Its something to compare what you are doing now with as far as money goes.

I just did a floor recently that was 880 sqft. two baths a big kitchen and a glue down wood living room. I was paid 3,000.00 cash for the job which took 4 days.( about 32 hrs) the customer bought the materials and had them drop shipped to his garage.. That was a pretty big job ..most tile jobs are in the 400 foot range but still I average about 900 feet a week or so

I dont want to sound like its the holy grail of other jobs to do besides trucking, I'm just saying that there are other things out there...choices that are less stressful for more money. I keep my CDL current but I cant see ever going back to driving.
