I drive a van for expesss-1 and we get 70-80 cents a mile most of the time and 13cent per mile for gas.so i end up kicking in more money for gas about 1.30 per gallon of regular fuel out of my own pay.

I was available sat,sun,mon,tues, and only got 1 delivery for 114 miles,waited 7 hr's to get another load(never happened) it's been real slow and i drove back home on my own gas money.So i did not make much at all after paying for gas and buying lunch for me and my wife during 7hr.

like the company but I need lots of loads in order to make a living at these prices.

So I'am looking for a companys that gives more per mile around
(90cents) and pay 100% fuel surcharge for van drivers.1,500-2,500 miles driving 7days a week

Does anyone have any recomendations?

Fedex doesn't pay 100% FSC as I understand it - I think that changed last September IIRC - I believe they pay around 58% of FSC ? Hopefully someone with them will chime in.

I too am with E-1 with a Sprinter currently doing a 28 mile run Trenton to North Philly...paid me 1.05 for all miles including 80 DH plus FSC

There's quite a bit more to consider other than which carrier pays the most per mile. Average deadhead, average loaded miles per month, accessorial charges back to the O/O, availability of group insurance plans for vehicle and drivers, FSC payments, are a few.

I know of no carrier that pays 100% of a driver's fuel expenses. The fuel surcharge, if based on the typical carrier's computation model, is structured so that the person paying for the fuel would get money to offset the high cost of diesel fuel. The offset brings the effective cost of diesel fuel to about $1.25 per gallon.

FedEx Custom Critical has been critisized in the forum for their method of compution, but they pay fsc for all authorized miles driven, that's DH to pickup, run miles and DH to recommended layover. They update the FSC weekly and this week they pay 10.7 cents to vans, 17.8 cents to C & D trucks and 26.7 cents to tractors; slightly higher on the west coast. They also charge many of their shippers extra for tolls and return 100% of those charges to the O/O.

I don't know that you were referring to me or my statement, but in any event just to be clear I wasn't criticizing FECC - just stating what was my understanding. BTW, that's a pretty good deal as far as getting paid FSC on the DH to P/U and D/H to layover I would say - wish they did that where I was at.

My clarification wasn't clear. When FedEx announced their new FSC payment plan last year, it drew critisism from many of the O/Os who were skeptical of their motives. I think the carrier's FSC is fair to all that realize that Independent Contractors are not entitled to reimbursement of all their fuel expenses.

C&M pays 1.00/mi and right now the fsc is 22%. Don't know if they're taking on vans at this point. Wouldn't hurt to call them tho.

If the carriers bid the loads correctly, then the acronym FSC would represent the words Fuel Service Charge. Whatever the amount of fuel required to complete the delivery would be calculated into the rate.

Do not taxicabs, trains, buses and airplanes cover their fuel charges by way of charging the consumer a rate that allows them to do so?

Stay where you are... You probably just need to become more efficient. I am currently with Express-1. I have tried several of the other carriers and have been here for a year and a half. What you are experiencing is one of the down points of the business. Jumping ship now will only make it worse.
How long have you been with E1? I see you were available for 4 days, but where was it that you were sitting??? Deciding where to sit is absolutely crucial. PM me if you want and I will give you some ideas where to go. Believe me you are with the right company. There is plenty of freight if you are in the right place to get some of it.
Be willing to deadhead..it is part of the deal.

I have been with express-1 since may,and I get stuck in louzyville kentucky a lot on saturdays then deadhead home after spending a nite(400miles).Everytime i ask express if I should relocate to a city they tell me to stay all the time .So I never know if i am in a good location or not.Can you tell me if I will get any loads in the first 2 weeks of slow time beginning july because
i really need the money?thanks

p.s. I am getting more loads but still deadhead home a lot but plan on staying with express-1,they treat you like family.

You DH 400 miles "everytime" you go to louisville? Must be something pretty special about home, to do that? And, we are perplexed why, we are going broke?

Sorry, July sucks for everybody...plant shutdowns, etc. make freight scarce at that time....Louisville isn't a great place to get freight..don't pay attention to where the dispatchers tell you to go unless they are willing to pay you deadhead to get there.(believe me they won't) Go where you have gotten freight before.My experience has been that freight destinations often are not good places to get freight from. I don't know where you live but if you can get to Chicago or northern Illinois in general , you will get freight. stay away from Detroit,Indianapolis,and St. Louis. Cleveland is good, Anywhere in northern Indiana, Knoxville, Nashville, or Charlotte are very good. If you want to make a decent living in this you have to be efficient. deadheading back home, unless you live in a good freight area, could likely be the difference between rags or riches for you.

Letzrock... I don't know what company you're with, but if they can't get you out of Louisville, something's wrong. Only a couple places I'd stay clear of, and Louisville is not one of them.

Now there is a real recipe for success in my book. Wow. The dispatchers have their finger on the pulse of the "big" board, have a fix on where the freight is booked at, call contractors for their services, but, don't pay attention to them???? All you newbs really need to internalize that one.

Hey Larry,
I'm just giving somebody who drives the same type of vehicle I do with the same company I do some information that has been valuable to me in the past...Why don't you offer something useful instead of some sarcastic comment? My point was that you have to take charge of your own business. At any given time there are countless drivers calling in trying to find out what area is hot. I Feel if we pay attention to where we have been in the past we can manage things better on our own, that's all.

Tennessee Hawk: I am happy to hear you get good loads out of Louisville but my experience has been long waits for little runs...
