What are the ways for owner to pay for gas on a 60/40 split owner pays for gas? Do you just give them credit card and hope they dont screw you. What are the safe and smart ways to do it. I know the ideal way would be to have driver pay for gas.

Don't do it, you already have the signs there that you will get ripped off. The best way to minimize the amount you will have stolen from you is with a fuel card that you set the limit on.

There is allways a chance of getting a dishonest driver. If he is buying to much fuel you will know.
Take it out of his pay but be careful not to falsely accuse. If they really want to work they will respect you and your truck. There is allways risk on a new driver. If it helps you to know I drove for a wholesaler out of Pittsburgh,Pa for nine years we went through many drivers in that time for many reasons about twenty but only one for stealing fuel. Good Luck.

I would never pay the gas if I were a fleet owner.....there is no incentive to slow down and drive responsibly.....sure I know of some fleet owners that use the pre 07 sprinters that get high mileage and they profit off the FSC.....

Your right Vanman!!

Sometimes I get lucky.....lol

But really...if a driver pays the fuel....and the owner educates the driver a little....like hey...this van will get this mpg at this rate of speed....it will also get this at that rate of speed...your choice....you can put an extra 20-40 bucks a load in your pocket or the tank....

In our early days we had a fuel stop down the street from the yard. Everyone left full and had cash to buy fuel as they were home weekly. This was non-expedite.
One night my father decide's to fuel a guys truck.
When he goes in to sign the tickect there's a five or ten dollar bill with the ticket.
My father says "Whats this ?" The attendant says "look at the ticket. I overcharge your boss and split it 50/50 with the driver. Pretty cool,eh ?"
Within days we had a fuel tank at the yard.

I know of one company that uses a prepaid debt card. They estimate the amount of fuel needed for the run, and load that much on the card. If a breakdown should occur, she could add more funds to the card instantly through a transfer on the Internet. Never could get screwed by more then what was preloaded on the card that day. Worked very well.

We basically had a great group of guys .
Don't know how long it had been going on or even if any Drivers actually particapated.
Years later when we had teamster hourly drivers we had a sign in and out sheet.
The theory was if Tommy wanted to get paid til 03:00 we'd rather him leave at 2:45 and write 3:00 than park on some side street for 15 minutes killing time. Nothing good happens parking a gasolene tanker on a side street or in an Alley.
Also,we had ways of knowing when the guy left. We knew who was getting us occaisionally.

One day my Father says Snake works ten hours per night. If I give him 8 hours work he'll stretch it to ten.
If I give him 11 hours work he does it in ten. He likes to leave at 2:00 and get to the gin mill at 2:10. Last call is 2:30 so he's sociable, but not too sociable. I give him about ten hours work, but if I'm in a bind I know he'll get alittle extra done.
Bosses aren't always as dumb as you think.
Except Roadway. They'd spend $5 trying to beat me out of a buck. You just had to laugh at them.

A one truck operator can get their own fuel card very easy in todays market.

Simple.
Determine what the vehicle type and milage on your vehical actual, the route miles are and fuel price averages. Driver pays for feel and you compensate them for what it should be. Remember get the reciepts. Have a no reciept no fuel comp policy.

So, if your van should average 15 MPG at GASOLINE 4.00/ gal at the pump thats
$ 0.26 per mile. Lets say he has a 500 mile trip at .26 he should spend $ 130.00 to
$ 150.00 max it is reasonable to allow at least $ .01 per mile. for a van .025 for a S/T running Diesel. This is for traffic you will need to pad this comp for inner city work. This is what you pay the driver for fuel unless ofcorse there is a mechanical or other issue.

If you are responsable for maintenance and its proven that a mechanical, terrain or other condition outside of a drivers controll caused exess fuel to be used then compensate the driver otherwise have the driver buy his/her own fuel. This will also help with the driving habbits. If a driver uses less fuel than you estimated dosent idle, reasonable speed, good routing, no exceptions on the freight, consider paying the difference as a bonus. Yeah, its a couple cents a mile but it may help keep a good driver.

Has any one used walmart student visa card where you have 2 cards with same numbers. You get one and driver gets one and you just deposit money to it. How does it works out. Or is there a better ways to tranfer money to driver?

Why complicate the simple? Pay a higher percentage to the driver and both benefit. I don't see any kind of advantage for a fleet owner to pay the fuel and pay the driver less. Unless of course they are deadheading all over the country.

Debit card, just deposit an amount daily. You can see how much and where they spend it online in the account. Real easy.

I see the next question. You have two accounts at the same bank. Transfer the funds to the card the driver is using from an expense account.

Driver paying for fuel also eliminates excessive idling, excessive speed and excessive wear and tear.
