WHAT ARE OUR HOURLY WAGE(s) ??

You shouldn't count the hours off duty or in the sleeper just because you are not home . Many construction workers spend time away from home but they aren't paid once they are off the job site . They do have their motels paid for and get perdiem for meals though . Some companies pay a laundry allownance if out for more than 5 days .

All this seems like voodoo accounting to me. Better be carefull Hedge, I remember recently some CEO'S from some biggie businesses got their peepees slapped for using this kind of math. Good analagy Fish, seems i've met way more of your type three's the last couple years than I ever figgured was available worldwide in a lifetime. But, to answer the question, I still maintain, if you are in business for yourself, your time is worth very little or nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Reading this makes me really appreciate our soldiers in far away lands, defending our freedom and others rights to be free.
They volunteered for this (no draft) and do you think they sit around and calculate their hourly pay rate? I don't think so!
Some things you just do because you want to, and feel good about what you are doing. The hidden benifeits are sometimes worth more than the $$$.
I personally think that if we were in this line of work JUST for the money, we would choose a different career. (with a few exceptions)

Even a bad day Expediting is better than agood day on an 8-5 job in the City for me!!

If one looks at this as an hourly wage one is not going to last long in this business.

You are building a blockaide to discouragement and dissipointment.

A POSITIVE Attitude is going to carry one much further than one of Woes Me, I am puttiing in the time with no results. This time of year is a point for us all to question why we entered into this. You have an obligation to research your decisions make changes and figure out with your own tallents if you are utilizing yourself to the max of your earning capicity.

Now let me just give you a rough figure I did. 24 x 31 = 744 hours if you earn 10K in a month (Dec) and I did I will add. That equals over $13.00 an hour for every hour. I spent Dec 3rd in my own bed, Dec 24, I came home at 4 PM, Dec 25, 26, and accepted a load on the 27th.

Personally for sitting, eating, showering, everything I had an excellent month. I worked hard, had one lousey week, spent a couple of days at home for X-mas and otherwise I ran very productivley.

A great wage? Thats for you to figure, very satisfied with my expenses to bottom line. I do not think I could have done better if I was offered it all over again. T-Hawk Highway S??????? comments?

I don't have my numbers in front of me but I've done this computation before. As best I recall if ya count time working it was a $12-15/hour job & if ya count all the time sitting when I was out over the road it often averaged less than $5/hour.

Yes, sitting is part of the job but there's a cost to doing it. Many jobs pay more per hour. This is more of a lifestyle choice.

Take care,

We came out on the 1st of January, and so far our hourly wage has been $20.64. That's all hours, 24/7. Divided by two people, team operation, less fuel, and you can see that the greeters at Wal-mart make more per hour than we do. However, based on an 8-hour work day/40 hour work week, we do pretty good. If someone was to offer you a job 1000 miles away from your home, you would take it or not based upon travel time, daily expenses, and what you thought you were worth on a daily basis. Not on what you made per hour for all hours away from home. If you were an hourly employ who worked for a large company that sent you to a seminar out of town, they would pay you your hourly wage 8 hours per day. Not for all hours away from home. What do we make per hour? Not much on the one hand, a lot on the other. But this is so much better than a 9-5. Who really cares as long as the retirement account can be funded?

IMHO, I don't see any cut&dry right or wrong here, other than sleep time should be left out of the equation. You have to sleep no matter where you're at. I would tend to lean towards Thawk's view. I know farmers that have run some form of this formula and, trust me, we're doing better than most of them no matter how you figure it.

It's amazing that ppl try to compare this job to a burger flipper. A company like JB and Swift will do that, since they have professional truck flippers ;)

If you're in your first year of expediting, it's hard to put any kind of wage on a loan app or the like. It's easier to put a whole year's net. Even putting a month is kinda dishonest, unless you choose one of your middle of the road months.

I'm sure if you hired some top of the line financial planner, he'd be able to figure it out for you.

>I don't agree with the sanity of accounting this way but a
>response to the question asked is as follows.
>
>An expediter that maintains a 70% availability will be on
>call, on duty, or on duty not driving for 255 days annually.
> If the expediter nets $50,000, before taxes, he will have
>earned $196.08 daily, or $8.17 each hour, sleeping or not.
>WOW, that's better than minimum wage.
>
>Don't count 8 hours a day cummulatively napping and
>sleeping, and another 2 half hour meal breaks. Your hourly
>pay will be $13.07

Terry and Rene understand the question.

Nobody is stating this is the best or the worst way to evaluate the job.

I'll restate the question one final time.

IF YOU DIVIDE YOU NET EARNINGS by TOTAL HOURS AWAY FROM HOME WHAT IS THE HOURLY RATE???????

If you prefer not to answer then don't.

And don't tell me about all the dumb ceo and owners of the companies that you drive for, and if you were in charge because you are smarter, but for the grace of god.....

I hear you on the CB every night and see you everyday preaching to the poor souls in the truck stop about how if everything was done your way, blah...blah...blah....

Be safe
