What about... pets?

Couple questions about pets:

1) Does anybody drive with a pet? I'm talking cat or dog (no wife jokes, please :p). How's that been working out?

2) If you had a pet when you started driving and it doesn't go with you did you give it up for adoption? Leave it at home? Other?

I've been thinking about this type of work for years but I have a cat that I doubt is going to adapt to life on the road well.

Thanks

Pets work for some and not others. There are some shippers/receivers that don't allow pets on their property. We are not allowed pets as part of our contract, so it does very much depend on the carrier, or division, of the carrier you chose to drive for.

If your carrier allows pets, take the cat with you and see if he/she adapts! My cat was a very homebodied scaredy cat but he's adapted well to life on the road. At first he mostly hung out in the bunk, but now he's up front when we're moving and even started sitting on our laps to check out the scenery....you may find after a short adjustment period you have quite the little roaf warrior! :)

Just remember to keep in mind that there it is possible that having a pet MAY cost you a load from time to time, depending on the carrier, division of that carrier, and the type of freight that carrier contracts for.

I've always had my cat out here so I can't say how it changed our loads but really as busy as we've been I can't imagine it effects loads too much...plus the benefits of having my Bigfoot to my own personal well being is so worth it!

Take the cat, or don't take the cat, that decision should be based on as much information as possible. As long as they know they MAY lose loads, then they can decide based on that.

Never a cat or dog, but I brought my Burmese python with me the first couple years I drove. I gave him up when my truck and I were elevated to White Glove. Although he was very quiet, I knew fully well he would be discovered during a sleeper inspection at customs or a nuclear facility.

I kept signs in the side windows when parked overnight stating "Deadly Snake Inside". It was a joke, because Bubba was as harmless as they come...but the lot lizards never bothered me as I can only assume they were apprehensive.

Feeding him was the biggest problem; he wouldn't touch anything that wasn't alive. Luckily I remembered what my semi-hippie carpenter friends did back in the 70's to feed theirs. They sent their innocent looking wives or girlfriends out pursuing ads for "Free Kittens For A Good Home". I also stopped in at local humane society offices when the town was large enough to support one.

Anyway, on my last trip to Florida before attending WG orientation I gave Bubba his well-deserved freedom by releasing him along US-41 a few miles west of Miami. He slithered off into the Everglades without a glance over his "shoulder".

I hope he is fat, sassy and content now, having found a Mrs. Bubba and raising a happy family.

Best pet I ever had and never once barked or clawed at the inside of my Freightliner!

I think the pet thing effects more Refer trucks than regular. I can't get out the door without my dog, his paw print is on the title.

I'm pretty sure that being dinner isn't anyone's idea of "a good home", and the fact that you resorted to subterfuge says you know it's wrong. If you can't obtain a pet's food without lying, maybe it's a pet you shouldn't have.

Well deserved freedom? Have you read nothing about the trouble Florida has had with invasive Burmese pythons, to the point that the state recently sponsored a reward for them, dead or alive?
Too bad you couldn't cash in, as long as you were going to abandon it anyhow.

Typical irresponsible pet owner: it's all about what you get from the animal, and when you no longer get what you want, just abandon it, with some maudlin nonsense about "hoping it finds a Mrs and raises a happy family".
What I hope is that no other animal has the misfortune to be your pet. :(

I'd suggest giving it a try, on a short run first. The cat might surprise you [never had one, but I hear they do that, sometimes]. Lots of drivers travel with cats, without any problems - just make sure your carrier knows, so they won't send you to a place that forbids them. [I traveled with a dog for 2 years, and never had any trouble at all.]
You might want to have a Plan B ready first, though, in case you were right, and the cat hates it.

So then how do you folks with cats handle their 'nature calls'? Do they just do their business outside when you stop?

Just like at home...covered litter box is under bunk, no special breaks required for him. Though it requires cleaning the litter box often, and the fact it's covered helps keep odors and litter tracking down. Being in a smaller space with any pet requires more attention and cleaning.

No, Cheri, I don't read much...mostly used comic books I pick up in restroom stalls at truck stops. Most of my time is spent playing video games. I like the ones best with monsters from outer space. Used to spend some time cozying up to female drivers with pets tho. Kinda killed two birds with one stone when Bubba was with me, if you catch my drift.

Wolverine,

Two years ago before my brother deployed to a forward combat base in Afghanistan (U.S. Army Special forces) He planted a "memory tree" for his daughter - my niece, ,Nancy, in His backyard for Her to visit whenever she started to miss my brother, a special place thatthey could both visit both literally, and spiritually while thousands of miles away from each other.

One day Nancy (4 years old) strolled to the back yard, missing Her daddy, to visit the "memory tree". She came up missing. The local Sheriff office was called, and after a several hour search, an alert neighbor spotted movement in the sawgrass, guess what ? It wasnt Nancy...it was a Huge Burmese Python with a morbidly distended belly. The snake was killed on sight, and upon slicing it open, our worst nightmares were realized. Local law enforcement officers begged us not to visit the autopsy room, using a pair of pink princess sneakers, found in the snakes digestive tract for positive ID of Nancy.

My brother and His wife have left Lake Okechobee Florida, for a safer State to rebuild their family and lives together.

I hold irresponsible, selfish, pet owners like yourself, responsible in part, for little Nancys horrible demise. My God have Mercy on your soul.

This was a VERY extremely irresponsible and HIGHLY illegal act. It is a shame you were not caught and arrested. Actions like yours are costing the United States BILLIONS of dollars to fix the damage that invasive species are doing to the environment, not to mention the damage to innocent human life. You should be ashamed. IF you are an honest man you will call the authorities in Florida, explain what you did and pay all fines and penalties that are due.

When I was younger I purchased a red tail boa whom I named fluffy. I owned fluffy for many years and I never had to stoop to lying to get food for him I just went to pet shops ans bought feeder mice and rabbits. When little fluffy reached 13.5' I realized he was getting too big for me to handle so I started looking for new homes. I ended up donating fluffy to the school program at the Louisville zoo. Not sure if he is still alive or not but I like to think he enjoyed getting to go to all the local schools for education purposes since he always was a little attention hound.

Edited by Admin: Not acceptable.

Besides, I'm sure there is no way that could have Bubba because he was released many miles south of Lake Okeechobee; although that snake might have been one of several my older brother released into the lake the last time he went bass fishing there. They had grown much too large for his basement terrarium and he didn't have the heart to destroy them.
