My personal thoughts are....these people are whack jobs!

The Westboro Baptist Church — known for its protests at the funerals of soldiers and people with HIV/AIDS — plans to picket in Joplin on Sunday, where at least 125 people have died in a tornado.

On its website, the church says “Thank God for 125 dead,” an echo of its common refrain crediting God with having people killed in retribution for the United States’ tolerance of homosexuality.

Members plan to be in Joplin on Sunday when President Barack Obama is to visit and may attend at a memorial service for storm victims.

The Westboro people are beyond belief. I am surprised that none of the mourners have not reacted violently.:( I guess that so far the mourners have had better sense.

Joplin should have, from the beginning, blocked anyone that wasn't carrying I.D. that showed that they lived there from entering the city. Jeepers, Xenia had the sense to do that and that was 1974!

You would think instead of picketing, they would offer a hand to the folks that could use the help.
Truly pathetic.

You would think. Radical religious groups are disgusting no matter what the religion or denomination. They should be ashamed. They are more useless than gum stuck on the bottom of a shoe.

I would love to stand across the street from them with signs praying for death to all Westboro baptists like they wish on others but I guess I won't mention it since we have sensitive members incapable of understanding what one may say in the soapbox vs real life.

1st Joe, there is too much "shame" amoung people anymore..it normally comes with "personal responsibility"...

2nd, I really don't think these idoits thought this one through real well...they are not picketing a single funeral, they are picketing a entire community that was just devastated....it could easily get out of hand...these idoits relay on those they are protesting being "civil" and abiding by the law....i would bet on that in this situation, there are segments of any city that will gladly fight back...

They are no different from a screaming child begging for attention and should be completely ignored.

Exactly. They are a very smart group, they know the law, and how to push buttons. Giving them attention only fuels their fire.
Don't forget they are the "god hates :censoredsign:s" group which I'll bet a lot of people on here had no problem with at that stage of their evolution.

There are quite likely some on here who still don't have a problem with them.

Wow, Turtle......without going back and digging, I can't recall anyone here that was defending this group.
Actually, I don't know that I can recall anyone here who specifically defended this group, either, at least not in a publicly posted message stating so explicitly, but defending them and not having a problem with them aren't necessarily one in the same. But for one, as wildly varied as the people and opinions are on EO, the chances that at least one person agreeing with the basics of Westboro are pretty good. Two, I know for a fact that one person in particular here agrees with the "God hates :censoredsign:s" sentiment so strongly that they believe that whatever Westboro needs to do in order to get that message out is fine. But, no, I'm not going mention them by name here. They aren't exactly a prolific poster, and it doesn't matter who they are, anyway.

I agree. But is it any more pathetic than those who believe that Obama is, in fact, doing a really good job as president? Or those who actually believe that Donald Trump planted a fake birth certificate into the hands of those in the White House? Or that Glen Beck has something useful to say? Or that there is a massive conspiracy to cover up death camps run by the most inept government agency ever, FEMA? Or that George Bush The Idiot was the brilliant mastermind behind 911? There are a lot of pathetic people who belive in some truly pathetic things.

All of the above are indeed, pathetic. But none of these hurt people like the actions of the members of this so-called church.

Hey, you're preaching to the choir, sister. :D

There are some people, at least one I know personally, who believe so strongly in the message, that the ends justify the means.

Then again, that's not uncommon with a lot of religions and their associated wackos.

What the WBC wants is attention, [they cancelled their plans to picket one funeral in exchange for free radio time], and it's the media that provides it. Maybe if their plans and pickets didn't get any publicity, they'd quit.
And maybe their appearance in Joplin will provoke people to retaliate, cause those folks don't need one more iota of misery - and many have nothing left to lose.

Lunatics who cause people to be upset have achieved what they set out to do. As abhorrent as their views are, I wouldn't let a stranger get under my skin, let alone wackos like this.
