Having a vacation house on Florida's East Coast, 200 yards from the water and six feet above sea level, Diane and I are watching this storm with more than passing interest. However, a lot can happen between now and Thursday. Forecasts have already been revised that place the hurricane further out to sea, albeit a stronger hurricane.
Kennedy Space Center is also on Florida's East Coast. Our neighbors, some of whom worked there their entire careers, tell us the location was selected because a hurricane has never hit that part of Florida. I'm not sure if that is true or an urban legend.
What say you, Florida-based expediters, true or urban legend?
Hurricane Charlie stirred things up a bit in 2004. Diane and I were there then but we noted little serious damage in the Space Coast area. Does that count as a hurricane strike?
It does not matter much. Our house is not moving but a hurricane is. If it hits, it hits. We'll just have to wait and see what develops. We knowingly took a risk when we bought the house. The consequences are ours to enjoy when the weather is good and suffer when it is bad.
