That question begs another question. Is it a load to wait to load, or is the question, how long would we get in the pile for the one that might come?

Hello this is Kevin

I drive a tractor with a Tval Reefer Trailer. I been known to lay over from a Friday for a Monday Pickup if the load is big like $7000.00 or more if Im running team or $2000.00 or more if Im running single.

The longest time I sat on a load was a 10days and that one paid $13965.00 now that one was worth the wait.

If its on a weekend and no freight I open up and Start the Phone Tree
But hey thats me.

Have a safe one
and God Bless
Kevin

for me it depends on the express center I'm in.If its a busy express center and there are trucks ahead of me,I might stay couple days. If its a so so center with lots trucks, ill sit til super time, and make my move to a busier ex center that is lacking in trucks, whether I get paid to go or not.
Being told on a friday that you have a monday pick up would all depend on where I was at the time,as you always want to deliver on monday,to make sure you get a full week of revenue,in expedite, its not unusual to get loaded on a week end, just depends on where you are.
If you count on that big load,to make your week, your going to put your self behind the eight ball,a coast to coast load, picked up on monday, wont get paid in that week,so your making one week short for that big load, but then the next week might be short again as your now out of the busy areas for expedite

It all depends how freight is moving in that area, where the next closest zone is, how many trucks are in the area, and my position among them. If I'm first out in Laredo, I'll give it a week. If I'm 5th out in NC, I might move toward KY after I drop, if no one is there.

interesting question, with landstar there are places I know I will get out of at max.two days, and I will sit, other places are dead and I will unload and deadhead without waiting, the gray areas I will give untill 6 pm and if no load offers I will deadhead to a better area that I can get too by midnight, and no later that way I
have my hours back by midmorning and am ready for the hot time of between noon and five when 75% of the expedited loads are going to be offered.

If in a hot zone i will wait it out till i get a load. If the area isnt so hot i would probably move after about 3-4 days. This also depends on my board position. If I'm not on the top of the list I may move sooner.

Great responses - but we can't use them if you don't put your name, who you are leased to and what you drive.

A lot depends on where I'm sitting: if I go to Laredo, I expect to sit a few days - if I'm in Dodge City, Ks, I'm just gonna U turn and head east immediately. If I'm not sure, I just call Bryan for expert advice, lol. Cheri, cargo van, Panther

RE: landstar/7yrs/super

Do people really and truly sit for 24 hours without getting a load, say, in Dayton, move up to #1 on the board, and then because 24 hours have gone by, they abandon their #1 position and move to Columbus or Cincinnati where they find themselves way down on the board? Only to wind up having to repeat the process again?

I have to believe that they do, since there are people who say they never sit more than 24 hours without moving somewhere.

Despite what many claim, there are no absolutes. It depends on where you are, what your board position is, how far you have to deadhead to move, even what day of the week it is. You can sit for days in Laredo since any load you get out of there will likely be a week's worth of loaded miles. In other towns your next load might be 200 miles, so you don't want to sit there more than a day or so. I don't think I'd sit in Toledo for 24 hours and then move to Cleveland for 24 hours then move to Akron for 24 hours then move to Columbus for 24 hours. I'd wait it out in Toledo.

Feel free to edit that down to the first two sentences if you like.

I've always based it on a combination of my experiences and opinions of people I trust. Some places I leave right away, some I stay a day. Once I'm back in the midwest, Indy, Dayton, Michigan, I stay until I'm loaded.

Right now I'm on a new learning curve. I've only been with C&M for 3 months and it's my first time with a carrier that's not heavily automotive.

If we're talking about a pre-dispatch situation I'd wait however long the wait was because I'd only accept if the load warranted the wait so that answer could be anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

If we're talking about making a delivery and waiting on the next unknown then it depends on location, board position, day etc. and could be anywhere from however long it takes me to finish paperwork and logbook to however long it takes to get the next job.

RE: How long to layover

I drive a van with my partner Hooligan. As a general rule, 24 hours is about as long as I will stay in any one place. In one day Hooligan has watered the lawn, and seen all the interesting sites in the area.

There are several other factors to consider such as:

How much activity for your size truck in that town

Are the runs normally long or short?

How fast is the board turning over. If the center avg is 2 a day, and you are number 4, move.

Finally are there alot of turndowns on loads from this location? Maybe all the loads are short, and you are looking for miles. Time to move.

I hope we all never have to make this decision because our wheels are turning.

It depends on where you are located in the United States. If we are unsure of an area we either call a friend or dispatch and ask about the area. As we become more familiar with the Express Centers we depend more on our own experiences.
