Water Pump bump noise

We are having a strange problem in the sleeper. Our water pump that gives us fresh water for the sink in the sleeper has started making a bumping noise. I actually timed it while trying to sleep the other night. Every 40 seconds it goes, "Bump" then 40 seconds later it goes, "Bump" and so forth. Now I know about things that go Bump in the night! Any ideas what would cause this? We emptied the water out thinking we had gotten some air in the water tank but once we filled it the bumping started again. We have a 2007 Freightliner so the pump is new but I wonder if it is going bad. Any ideas?

The pump is probably an "on-demand" pump - in other words it's designed to come on at a certain pressure (low) and then will probably shut off at a certain pressure (high)

You have a small leak somewhere - which allows the pressure to drop, causing the pump to come on. Because the leak is probably very small, pressure builds rapidly when the pump comes on (and you're not using the water) and the pump shuts off almost immediately .... hence the "bump"

I suspect the pump is similar to the type pump that RV's use - which is similar (nearly identical) to pumps used on agriculural sprayers, which I am familiar with.

BTW, the leak could external (easy to spot) - or could be internal to the pump itself (the pressure check valve) which is impossible to spot visually - since there is no external leak.

Just a guess ..... but hey it was free ;)

India do you leave your pump off at all times until needed? Ours will make the same noise if we have accidentally leave the pump on.

Mine has done that since new. I never turn the pump on except when I want water. I presume the water drains back out of the pump into the tank and it has to reprime itself and that's the noise. I just keep it turned off with the wall switch.

Thanks for the advice. We have been leaving the pump on all the time and never even considered turning it off when not in use. A quick flip of the switch fixed the bumping and now we can sleep again! Thanks!!! india

Just curious? If I ever get dumb enough to modify my truck with a bigger sleeper & shorter box, I would love to have running water. Can one get hot water? or is that a major expense. Check out this neat little sleeper floor plan from Double Eagle...

FYI,
They do make an on demand water heater that draws 40 amps when you use it. If I remember right the unit is around $75 and it is about half the size of a shoe box.

I lost the link but I am trying to find it and post it.

Hot Water, its a waiste of space from one who ripped his out (ME). It takes up valuable storeage space.
When it breaks its gona cause you nightmares (Mine broke and leaked all of the Water both in the Hot Water Tank about 4 gallons plus another 1 Gallon from me trying to figure out what happend. Thus five gallons of fresh water inside of that little sleeper. Took days to dry out, windows steamed up what a mess.

I live just fine with cold water, if I need hot Microwave or just a little Tea Maker, since I have a Microwave and do not believe in more THINGS in the truck you get the picture.

Easy tip for doing dishes, soak your rag I use little 4x4 rough on one side flat white on the other put a little extra water on my plate two drops of soap 20 seconds and she is to hot to touch, let is soak wash and do my fork, knife etc... Than I Bounty clean my pot or pan and use the rag to wash it out, rinse and dry. I can do all of my dishes with about a two cups of water including the rinse. Throw the rag or what ever its called out about every trip home.

Save your Money stick with Cold.
