The good news is the law finally gives the cops some real teeth to get the real idiots off the road. Have any of you seen these idiots on thier bikes doing wheelies at 100 plus mph in traffic? The only person I feel sorry for when these dopes wipe out is the person who runs them over. Street racing has gotten really out of hand on the highways in Southern Ontario and something had to be done. The law was spurred on in large part by the death of a trucker north of Toronto in the early summer. He died a hero because he kept his rig from crossing into oncoming traffic (through that ridiculous small guardrail on the 400) but it cost him his life. The whole thing was caused by 3 cars full of teens racing up the highway.

As for the 2 hands on the wheel thing....It's amazing how stories get started. years ago a story got started that Ontario would fine you if you didn't have metal valve caps on your tires and an extra jug of window wash in the truck! The MTO actually had to but the rumour to rest in thier commercial vehicle newsletter.

Don't worry about coming to Ontario..it's no worse than PA:p

I've only been in a short hop over from the bridge. Apparently there's an invisible (to me) tattoo on my forehead that says always only send a mile or two into Canada. I confess I haven't paid enough attention to know if my mini-hops ever use the 401. Maybe that's what the road is to the middle of the bridge. If so I've been on it a few times. Otherwise no.

watch out where you do that. that could be consideered child abuse in canada. i remember an american couple getting charged when some right thinking citizen reported the mothers spanking/swatting of a toddler a couple years back.

couple years ago we were returning from up north on a sunday night along with thousands of other wisc and ill dwellers and in front of us on 43 were fours bikers slowing down to 40 then doing wheelies. slowing and doing wheelies. got a license plate on the only licensed bike and call the cops. would it have been wrong to hit one when he suddenly slowed down so he could wheelie again? after all street racing is dangerous, right?

I've driven a lot of miles on the 401, it's a good highway. And the problem with idiots racing on a public highway isn't just in Canada, we have plenty of them in the U.S. too. (A much bigger problem, I think, since the very first "2 Fast, 2 Furious" movie came out, beginning a surge in interest in 'street racing' both cars and motorcycles.)
The attempt to stop the insanely dangerous speeds has my support 100% - it's my life at risk, as well as everyone else's.
A law mandating two hands on the wheel at ALL times is just ludicrous, and that it would apply only to commercial drivers is a further assault on common sense.
I don't know whether lawmakers in Canada are much different than those in the U.S., but that such a law was enacted wouldn't surprise me at all - and that's where I have to sigh.
