Vitamin D

We have been reading up on Vitamin D and not getting enough. We had our DOT physicals last time we were home. We always have blood work done at DOT time as we avoid the doctors as much as possible. I have been learning about the affects of not having enough Vitamin D in your system and I had ours checked. We were low enough that we were issued a prescription for one month. We take several vitamins and I was very surprised when the results came back.

I received this article from Bob Perry, The Trucker Trainer and thought I would share with you:

Need (another) reason to keep your vitamin D intake up? New research suggests that those with low levels of this essential nutrient may have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Researchers in Utah followed 27,000 men and women over the age of 50 who had no previous history of heart disease. After a year, they found those with the lowest levels of vitamin D were:

  1. 77 percent more likely to die than those with adequate levels of vitamin D.
  2. 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease than those with adequate levels of vitamin D.
  3. 78 percent more likely to have a stroke than those with adequate levels of vitamin D.
  4. Twice as likely to develop heart failure than those with normal levels of vitamin D.
The study, from the Intermountain Medical Center, was presented at the Nov. 16, 2009, session of the American Heart Association's Scientific Conference. Dr. Weil recommends prudent daily sun exposure to support the natural production of Vitamin D in our skin, as well as speaking to your doctor about checking vitamin D levels and supplementing if necessary.

Well it can be very helpful but again like the green tea thing, if you have kidney issues, it is far better to consult with a doctor than start downing the pills - not say you do or recommend that but some people read into those studies to justify all kinds of stuff.

thanks for posting the info

It does not take much sun to produce your needed Vitamin D. Mine was fine the last time I was checked and that was in early spring when the sun was not real strong yet. No need for supplements if you go outside often WITHOUT sunscreen. Not long enough to burn. Nature works when we let it.

I like to lay out in the sun; smoke cigarettes, eat paint chips and sip red wine.

Layout I was totally shocked with our results. Both Bob and I are outside as often as possible and neither one of have ever worn sunscreen.

Both of us have pretty good tans summer and winter as we are outside people. We take a multivitamin which also led to our belief that we were in good shape.

A tan does not always mean you are OK. It is best to get your Vitamin D level checked and be sure.

I have blood work done a minimum of twice a year, normally more. So far, knock on wood, (knocking on the side of my head) I have always been in the normal range. Never a problem. My doctor has always been happy with that. I don't know about the tan part, I tan if I look at the sun, don't have to even go out in it!! My "D" production is one of the few things that works as well as is did 40 years ago, of of the VERY few. It is hard to believe that I am just not 18 anymore and that I have to compensate for a rapidly aging body!! :( Oh well, at least I am upright and on the right side of the grass!! :D Good post, people need to be aware of their blood levels on many things. Thanks for bringing it up.

We would not have been tested for Vitamin D levels if we had not specifically asked for it. The test right now is not one of the tests that are normally run.

Not many Dr's do. They always do at the VA. They like to "play" with things there. Lots of new trainee DR's and they provide them with stuff to learn on. No matter to me, it does not cost me any more either way. I see the same DR every time, but often have as "extra" one or two at the same time. They use our blood work as training as well.

there is an old fashion drink that comes from cows,,,I think it is called MILK. Something to do with Vit--D, could be wrong.

As adults not many of us drink as much milk as we should. I am a cheese freak which is another reason I did not think I would have a problem.

The sun is where you get the most Vitamin D not from milk.

Last year I had to raise my good LDL and lower my tricycerides..I started taking them Omega3 tablets...almost NO effect....My Dr...said you know one serving of fatty fish a week will do more then a months supply of pills...I've been doing the fish thing as often as I can and bingo...the numbers are improving and I don't have the expense of buying pills...

Just look at your diet and lifestyle and make that small change...heck with the pharma companies..

Since the body produces the vitamin d it needs from the sun, my question would be what is causing your body to not be doing it's job. That it happened to both of you makes me wonder if there is a problem with the test. Or could it be a result of overdosing on green tea? Caffeine is a major component of many of the over-the-counter appetite suppressants. Caffeine is also a diuretic, so you might be flushing away the good stuff too.

Yeah, like OVM said, it's what you eat. I read an article about one of the simplest diets (I'm not talking weight-loss diets here) that humans can consume indefinitely and not have any long term deficiencies. It is potatoes and milk. I'm thinking that's why I manage so well on milk shakes and fries. I think grapes and nicotine was another good diet.

I'd have loved to have been there when the first cave man tried cow's milk.

I sometimes eat that junk, but i don't gain wgt, but then again, I don't pile my plate so full it falls over the side. Why do that anyway,,its all u can eat, u can go back and get another plate, oh, the joys of gluttony. Would someone get me another helping of taters and chicken please,,lol :D PS and an icetea sweeten and a roll.

Because to some people me included food is a addiction and they just can't help themselves. I know I have been there, I am still struggling with it and will be for a long time. At first I stopped going into restaurants that have buffets because I could not control myself. But found out that I can not go into any restaurants at all because I can't control myself when I am in there. So know alls I eat is premade crappy tasting diet food which controls my portions. This is the only thing I have found that works for me. I am jealous of those who can eat what they want all day and not gain a pound. Lucky #$!ker's
