To go along with the question of winter tires vs standard tires here's another that occurs. Looking at the Bridgestone Blizzak as an example, it's available in the OEM 245/75 size and a 265/75 size. Would the wider 265 for the rear be a better choice for traction/performance?

No ,
all it will do is reduced your fuel millage .
a deer footprint have the same traction as an Elephant leg , but still match better then a dolphin .
think about it this way :
for the same weight , and HP , if you spread it on a smaller area of the road surface , you will have a better traction.

if you want to own 6 tires for the van, more power to you, but the rear 2 will never be in the rotation pattern ....remember, you will be traveling all over the country...not in snow a full 3 months of the yr on a daily basis.....

Narrow tires are better in the snow, the wider the tire the less traction on snow and ice. Look at Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs. They all suck in the snow and ice. Yes, being rear wheel drive has something to do with it, but the also the wideness of the tire plays a part.
If your driving in sand then wide tires would be better

yeah its the narrower/std size tire for winter. you want a narow footprint to cut thru the snow. wider is better in dry weather. had no trouble last year with my m&s tires even in the icey 4" thick lot up in green bay. just use low gear.
