In case anything has changed with recent laws enacted would you van guys go over where and when you have to scale? I'm thinking it's mostly never but with a few exceptions so please list the exceptions.

I have never scaled, but i am told there is a Ag scale as you go into Fla that ALL trucks including under 10,000 gvw are suppose to enter...but i have yet to see it....

The nice thing about the Florida inspection is that the sign specifically says cargo vans. Michigan seems to be the grayest. For what that's worth.

Yup...Florida stop at the AG inspection not the scale...two different creatures...

Wyoming IF you are going to deliver within the state go into the port of entry....if passing thru don't bother...

Fastman, i've never heard about stopping at the AL scales. As far as a log book, being under 10K lbs, don't need one, unless you're carrying over 1K lbs of haz-mat.

Dennis, the AG stops that I've stopped at are on I-75 @ mm 446 and on I-95 @ mm 381. Even if you are in a CV you have to stop there, like Ebsprintin says their signs says to.

Out of the dozens of times I've been in and out of FL I've always stopped there and the guy just waves me thru. Only one time I was asked what I was carrying and was asked to see my BOL. Then he told me enjoy the sunshine after I dropped. They are pretty friendly folks there at the AG stops.

As far as scale houses in any other states I do not stop. I just move over a lane to let the oncoming trucks back on the freeway.

Thanks for the FLA Rts. and MM'ers Enemy...As for the Log book, kind of tough since we in CV's don't use them...

This is the explaination I got from the port of entry in Wyoming...

They don't really want you in there but the politicians wisdom, it is the books....

Should you get into an accident or get pulled over for say speeding....the trooper will check out to see if you checked in at the port of entry....he will then issue you a big fat ticket for not doing so...at his discretion of course

You don't get on the scale...just park and run in with your BOL, DL,and your DOT number and they enter you in the computer. ONLY if you are delivering in Wyoming

Guys and Gals;

Here is info on Alabama's Hours of Service Regulations. Please notice that there is no exemption noted for vehicles under 10,000 lbs. not being required to log. The HOS are discussed beginning on page 99.

I bring this to your attention as I had a van driver placed Out of Service for not having a logbook in the state of Alabama a few years back. Since then I have instructed every van driver to keep a logbook when doing a trip through Alabama. Better safe than sorry. Surely you could call the state and ask ten different people, and get 10 different answers. The only opinion that counts is the inspector placing the driver Out of Service.

Good job Fastman!

Thanks,

Rob,
The law is still on the books but the enforcement is dependent on the roving patrols and the officer doing the spot checks. They seem not to care until someone complains about it in Lansing.

The other part is, you better have signs on the van if you do get pulled over by one of these roving patrols. I heard that the fines will be going up for commercial vehicles without proper numbers and names on the side. They have taken notice of the hot shot people in pickups not scaling even though they are over 10k and have to log.
