I was told by another driver yesterday that i should be getting my valves adjusted every 150k or so, my big mercedes now has 300k on it and he was amazed that i hadnt had an"overhead", as he called it.

can some of you pros help me out. Am i missing the boat here or what?

150 sounds about right, the engine maintenace manual should give you that type of information.

At 300,000 miles, I would certainly have it done. It is likely covered under your warranty if any work or parts are needed.

I caution you on that its way to long, its very inexpensive compared to what could happen if it is not done sooner.

I had mine done at 90K and I could imm. tell a big difference, much quiter. Cost on a Cummins was around $300.

I want to thank JFK1954 for starting this subject!

It's one of those things that I missed or forgot about!

I've been noticing that my International has been getting a little bit louder lately and maybe even a slight power loss, I just couldn't put my finger on what was happening, at first I thought it was some weak fuel and was trying to remember where I bought fuel at the time I noticed it.

The wife kinda shook her head at me like she thought I was just going along with what others were saying when I told her that it seemed like the same thing was going on with our truck so I told her I was going to look it up in my maintenance manual and there it was, 120k is the recommended intervial.

I wonder if this could cause a higher rate of Soot? I don't idle anymore than needed and keep all the filters changed.

Well it's off to the shop in the am to get this taken care of! so thanks again!

The soot is probably a clogging or clogged injector. Last year I complained on this site as to why everytime the truck sat for more than a day and I fired it up my roof and box were covered in specs of soot.

Finially the truck started running very rough, took it in and they did another computer test and discovered my #5 was only working at 20-25% replaced it and now no more soot except after truck wash. You may also be getting a clogged injector. The valve adjustment did nothing for performance just ran quite again, no more click click clicking.

Good luck I hope this helps but keep us posted.
