I would have to agree on that brown!! The purple promise works pretty darn good for us! And I am probably prejudice but our truck even looks good in purple and blue!

OK...for those of you who I have not gotten back to...I do sincerly apologize. The planning phase for launching on this website was very poorly thought out, not to mention I was pulled over from dispatching in late august, and we launched on September 1st. If it were up to me, I would have (1) researched the runs we had and recruited accordingly, (2) begged, kicked and screamed for more help. Just to give you an example, In september alone, I called back more than 300 applicants. I am the ONLY person screening calls and pre-applications, so if it takes me more than 3 months to get back to you, you've probably gotten lost in the numbers shuffle. I don't mean to ignore anyone, but it's virtually impossible to call EVERYBODY back. I could call everybody back, and RUSH you off of the phone, but I don't think that's very good business, is it? I give every applicant at least 15-20 minutes on the phone, and THIS is not the only thing I do here. I need at least two more people to do NOTHING BUT screen calls, and there's no way management will authorize that.
Here are some things you can be assured of
(1) if you submit a pre application, and you own a vehicle, I WILL save it to my hard drive.
(2) We will not hire drivers if we feel we cannot keep you busy. makes sense, right?
(3) UPS upper management has FINALLY given us a time frame as to when we will be getting more business. Early July is the target, and I will probably be swamped again during that time.

If you want an application, I will send you one via email or regular mail. I WILL NOT process it until we (1) can be sure we can keep you busy, and (2) you say so.

I know some of you are very frustrated that I haven't gotten back to you, especially those of you who call the recruit voicemail number, I sincerly apologize. From your perspective, you probably would expect for us to have at least 10-12 people in our recruiting department. NOT SO. we have 4. FOUR people, who do specific functions. I am the primary Recruiter, and I have a person who backs me up, who also happens to handle 60% of the other functions that comprises this department. As of April 1st, we have had well over 5000 voicemails/pre-applications from our launch. If i've contacted 25% of that, I would be shocked.

PM me with your email address or address if you would like a full application for me to put on file for when the freight really comes rolling in this summer.
;)

Nice picture: still a Freightshaker no matter how it's dressed up...

Seems everyone wants to get diverted from the main question, since you don't know, you just want to get goofy.
UPS has to decide whether they are in the biz or not. When I last talked to the person who should know, the top brass haven't made up their minds. Thus, based on volume of freight, they only put on a few trucks where they need them. They have no color or logo, only magnetic signs.
I saw one van with said sign sitting in Ohio last winter. If I was a betting man, I would say that UPS expedite will be stillborn...

I wouldn't distress any JB. Many wouldn't be any good after ya got them on board. Specially the impatient ones that are jumping around. If you didn't have enough work, or, too much work, or..... they'd whine about that too. So save yourself some heartburn and let'em whine about this.

jbrbears,

On October 13, 2006, you said, "...I will not mention average miles per week, because the figure would not be a reflection of the flow of business we have. We are currently dispatching 75-80% of our freight to cartage companies (panther,tri-state, etc), hence the small owner operater fleet. Our goal is to flip that, and dispatch 75-80% of our freight to owner operators, and the rest to cartage companies."

Could you elaborate on that please? Are you saying that when UPS launches this summer, a significant amount of expedite freight currently hauled by Panther, Tri-State and others will be diverted to UPS Expedite owner/operators by a simple act of will on UPS's part? If so, in terms of market share, how much freight does UPS believe it will own once the deed is done?

I presume FedEx Custom Critical would not be affected since it is unlikely that UPS would send anything FedEx's way unless absolutely neceasary. But you mention two major expedite carriers by name (Panther and Tri-State). What concerns, if any, should their contractors have if they do not wish to switch to UPS Expedite?

In other words, is UPS preparing to drop a bombshell in the expedited freight marketplace that will negatively affect a bunch of owner-operators with competing carriers?

You have been open and honest with the information you have shared to date. Thank you in advance for your answer to this question.

As I have posted earlier, in the past ten (10) years of dealing with UPS, when they want to get serious about expediting, they will purchase an existing company.

This is how they do things. And, usually within 2-3 years, they will gradually replace the existing corporate staff with their own people.

They start from the top officer, continue through mid-mgt, etc., etc.
and work their way down to the dispatchers.

I wish JBR well, but would not be surprised within the next year he will be doing another job with UPS.

That's just how it is.

Be safe.

I don't know how much more I can elaborate...it won't be on "a simple act of will", it will be careful, elaborate planning and recruiting. Panther, tri-state and other expedited carriers shouldn't worry too much for a while, the "flip-flop" of our percentages won't swing over immediately...it may take 2-4 years for those percentages to completely turn. We have contracted rates with panther and Tri-state and other major expedited companies, so they WILL be affected somewhat by how much freight we dispatch to them, but again, we won't be hiring 50 drivers per week, so it will take time to see the effects of our hiring. hope that helps...
