updated newbie plan

This is what I am thinking moving forward.
I am planning on running as an independent for hopefully a couple companies.Working for a couple brokers I am thinking keep the deadhead/waiting to a minimum
I understand i must get my own commercial insurance.Have a call into my broker but looking for maybe a more expeditor friendly insurance comany just in case
I am going to try to stay in the midwest 400 mile runs or so(I am from Chicago)although I will travel anywhere.I can stay out long periods of time.It is about making money. My thinking on this is it seems to be a niche that I would be ok with

I am pretty much debt free but I do have college coming up for my daughter.

I currently have 1 cargo van (local currior work now)and I am looking for another to put a driver in.Been offered a few things so fairly confident can keep a driver busy

My plan is three cargo vans by years end although that might be to agressive.Depends on how it goes

Thank you to the folks who have pm"d me with advise it has helped.
If I am missing something please help me out.Again any advise is appreciated
I have read a good portion of the threads in the forums so no need for that suggestion.

Thanks again

Larry

One contradiction I noticed is you want to keep deadhead down and loads shorter. The shorter the loads the higher your deadhead percentage will be in general. For example you do a 400 mile load and drive 70 miles to your next pickup or do a 1200 mile load and drive 100 miles to your next pickup your deadhead is much less of a percentage. Also the less you want to sit the more you will have to deadhead to find loads. It does take a mix of both to really get miles and make money of course.

Best of luck in your travels

You have a plan, all our "expert" advice aside....only you know how it is going and your goals.....trial and error, make the necessary adjustments, stay on top of things and see how it goes...have a back up plan.

Good Luck...Ken aka OVM

Thanks for responding...I understand the DH model better now and it makes sence.I really don't care how far I drive was just something I was thinking might be a good niche.
As I research all of this it has become apparent that this is exactly what I have been searching for.
Please keep the information coming as I see it I am thruely benefiting from all the experience here and I plan on taking full advantage of that
