Gas or diesel ?
Have you checked your oil level ? It could be your oil sending unit. When was your last oil change ?

It's easy for the sending unit to get gummed up in this weather and show low pressure at idle. I just hady changed. If pressure shows normal at highway speed I wouldn't worry about it (check your dipstick though).

Wow, another one?

You know when I see someone on the side of the road or with a truck that don't start and I find out they don't have oil in the sump, I am happy to sell them a few gallons for $50 a gallon.

Friday while I was over in Canada, there was someone from one of the majors sitting in a parking lot near the bridge with his hood up, so I stopped to see if I could help. He had no clue how to read his dip stick, so I showed him and then sold him four gallons of oil, his engine takes six. It sounded bad but he got back into the states. I would think that the truck will be up for sale soon.

I know his was a quart low, which given the engine WOULD not show on the gauge, but it means he isn't checking his van out too often - how often should he check?

maybe every 3000 miles?

Read what he said -

Not really - oil warms up, and the pressure should be consistent.

I just stopd for gas and the gauge dropped.

What does this mean?

The gauge goes through the ECM as part of the gauge system, one reason why they need to be "calibrated" with the ECM if the gauge is replaced.

If he read what I am saying, it is simply to tell him that a bigger issue is if he has a full sump and 2000 miles later, it is a quart down, then it means there is a problem.

Check your oil

Scott, by the way, I am trying to help the guy and others. A good question for Leo (because he keeps watch of these things) is how much oil does he go through?

Down a quart of oil 9 days after an oil change means you are either burning/leaking oil or someone shorted you a quart when doing the oil change. I have never had my oil changed at a quick lube place or a shop. I would assume they are pumping oil from bulk containers and the accuracy of the meters could be questionable. My advice to anyone having oil changes done by an outside source is before you leave the property check for oil leaks, then turn off the engine and let it sit for 10 minutes and check the oil level and make sure they replaced the filler cap.
